Disgusting

Today while I was doing errands, I stopped in a parking lot and saw a car with its front end pretty well smashed up, with parts lying scattered past it in a way that suggested someone came down the aisle way too fast and hit it.

Given that it was just sitting there, with no clean-up and no evidence of any effort to secure it or have it towed, I had a bad feeling that it had been a hit-and-run accident. As badly as it was damaged, the other driver surely had to be aware of what had happened. This wasn't just a little brush, a scratch or a bit of paint chipped.

Sadly, this sort of thing is happening all too often. I regularly see postings on Nextdoor from people who were the victims of hit-and-run accidents, or witnessed them.

I'm wondering if we're seeing more people driving without insurance, such that if the car is at all driveable, they figure its better to flee and hope they're never called to account than to be unable to show proof of insurance. Sadly, as long as no one is injured, the cops do tend to treat it as something to be handled by the insurance company of the person who got hit, rather than something to be investigated.

It's a long way from when I was taking driver ed and our teacher took great pains to impress on us that hit-and-run was a crime, with significant penalties.
