Scientists have discovered that
gravity waves are moving through the universe like a gigantic hum in the fabric of space itself -- and no one is sure what is causing it. The most common theory is super-massive black holes at the cores of merging galaxies, but there are some other theories that involve exotic matter, cosmic strings, and the like, things that can actually disrupt space-time rather than merely stretch and compress it.
Right now the biggest problem is the limitation of the detection technology. Using measurements of a pulsar, it can't detect individual sources, only a sort of average of all the activity in the universe that distorts the fabric of spacetime. However, it's hoped that a larger body of observations may enable the strongest sources to stand out in the data.
