Writing Challenges

This week's Odd Prompts writing challenge at More Odds than Ends was from AC Young: I hope that that’s insufficiently unclear.

Now that sounds like a smartass at work -- which immediately made me think of Reggie Waite. Except what circumstances would he be doing that?

On the other hand, there was another Shep who'd definitely say something like that: Spruance Del Curtin, Shepardsport Pirate Radio DJ and all around thorn in the side of authority.

Except thanks to some technical problems with my laptop while I was visiting family for the holidays meant I didn't have the time to write anything involved, so I ended up with just a brief scene.

Insufficiently Unclear

Autumn Belfontaine knew there was trouble when Spruance Del Curtin came sauntering past the newsroom. "Check your inbox. I trust this version will be insufficiently unclear."

Autumn suppressed an urge to roll her eyes. Not in front of the news crew. As news director for Shepardsport Pirate Radio, she needed to maintain some semblance of decorum.

There were times when she wondered why she'd refused the position of station manager, given she was the only one around here with any previous experience in radio. And then things like this happened, and she was glad that she could pass the matter off to someone who wasn't any relation to the one person around here who was always pushing the limits on what was acceptable conduct.

And to think that my main reason for turning it down was wanting to remain an on-air personality and stay in the news business. Pretty much every station manager I've ever know was too busy with the paper-pushing side of running the place to spend any time in the DJ booth. Whereas running the newsroom doesn't keep me from doing the morning and evening drive-time news segments. I'd never have guessed that my choice would spare me from dealing with discipline issues, especially from someone who, in genomic terms, is my uncle, given my father would've been his clone-brother.

I also managed to get a story written for this week's Indies Unlimited Flash Fiction Writing Challenge. My effort is about Maureen from The Road to Silicon Valley having her first Christmas in California.

As always, if you'd like to participate in Odd Prompts, just send your prompt in to oddprompts@gmail.com to be assigned a prompt of your own. Or if you're not up to the commitment of trading prompts, you can always check out the spare prompts and see if any of them tickle your creativity.

There will be a new word and picture prompt up at Indies Unlimited on Saturday. Until then, the polls will open tomorrow for voting on the Readers' Choice Award, and will close at 5PM on Thursday.

In the meantime, keep writing.
