reading into things too much

So, this is going to be a REALLY NERDY POST. Just so you know. In essence, this is a post about TV shows. \
About what makes a TV show good, and what makes it not so good.
But mostly, it's about a little sci-fi series called Torchwood.
One of the things I loved about Torchwood was it's ability to be fantastical and yet down-to-earth at the same time. You could take the aliens and the time travel and stuff out of it, and it would still be decent. Not... as interesting, of course, but it would be a decent show. I think it's partly because it takes these very ordinary people (namely Gwen and Owen, and to a lesser extent Ianto and Tosh) and puts them into a very extraordinary circumstance. Now, of course Doctor Who did a similar thing, with the companions and all, but it's not the same. We got a bit of domesticity with Rose, but in the end, the entire premise rests on the fact that they get taken away from real life and onto a wild adventure.
I'm not saying this is bad, of course. Torchwood and Doctor Who, while occupying the same universe, are two very different shows. They serve a different purpose, and I love both dearly
A lot of people seem to call Torchwood out on the fact it's really "raunchy" (I hate the word, honestly. It makes me think of ranch dressing), but I think that goes back to what I said earlier; it stays true to life. It talks about sex because real people talk about sex. And many other things besides. People cheat and lie and manipulate each other, aliens or not.

Stuff I need to get done by Sunday night:
  • Put away clean laundry
  • Make banner for LJ
  • work on project 3
  • get started on research methods paper
  • finish social psych readings
Also, some thoughts on the PokeWalker; given what I read on Bulbapedia and Serebii pre-release, I'm severely disappointed with the level gain speed. I assumed it would be like, a level for every 100w, or maybe even 1000 steps... but no. As far as I can tell, you get 1 level by going on the walk, regardless of the number of steps you accumulate. Which bothers me. I guess it still works as a way to get pokemon and items, but since it's largely up to chance (I've lost 4 or 5 Murkrow today), I don't see the point. I guess it's okay for increasing happiness, but my Togepi evolved in basically no time at all, and he never left the DS.

Other than that, HeartGold is fucking awesome. I had some doubts about the Pokeathlon at first, but now it's probably my favorite thing about the game so far, other than the ability to walk with any pokemon you like. Yes, even Magikarp.

I picked up The Fountain today; I meant to watch it forever ago, let's hope it will be worth the $10 I paid for it.

P.S. Renewed my paid account for a year, just when I decided not to spend any more money OTL

nerding out, pokemon, tv
