How did you spend summers when you were a kid?
Hmmm....well, for the most part, the only things I remember with much clarity is going to the beach with my father. We went every summer for a long weekend at Virginia Beach, stayed at the Colonial Inn, which is now a Best Western and doesn't have vacation packages anymore. Every summer, we went for a week in Cape Hatteras, NC, stayed in this phat house a block off of the beach, had a huge loft upstairs, and a hot tub on the lower deck, plus a BBQ pit in the backyard. I remember getting stung by a bee on my foot one year in the backyard, carrying a tray of steaks out to my dad, while I was wearing flip flops. THAT SUCKED, especially since I"m allergic to bees enough to need an epi pen if I get stung. Nearly every summer, we went to Chincoteague Island, VA right around the time of the Pony Swim, where they brought wild ponies from the next island over for an auction and fair. I loved the wildlife reserve and the beach the most, plus the hotel pool. We always stayed at the Seahawk there, they've got a huge statue of a pony out in front of the hotel, and we'd always get an efficiency suite so that I could have a friend with me. We would usually stay there for a long weekend but if my dad had more time off, we'd stay a whole week.
If I wasn't being a beach bunny, I would be going camping with friends, going on Youth group trips (lame, most of them but the Native American Pow Wow at Natural Bridge, VA was awesome), or going to public Wiccan Sabbat gatherings. I also read about 2 books a week for most of the summer, trying to get as many from the recommended reading list from the school done as possible, and I usually wrote up a good enough draft of a book report to be able to edit it later and turn it in. Way to cheat a bit and not actually have to read them during the next school year. That way I had more time for all the homework, band practice, theater rehearsal, field hockey, and all the other crap I tried to do. But, yea...
Speaking of band, once I was in high school, there was a whole week of band camp at Ferrum College in VA. This was usually gruelling, due to both the heat and the strictness of the schedule. However, I usually roomed with good friends, and we did have 2 hours after we were done working for the day before bed so we'd usually go swimming or have an ice cream social, watermelon social, or something to do with people from other bands. So, despite it costing somewhere around $200 for me to go, it was worth it to me.
