"Graveyard Girl" is my crack of the year. I love it so much that I made a ringtone, which I don't normally do, cause I hate my phone ringing.
I'll be compiling my list soon, but a preview goes as such:
In Our Bedroom After the War - Stars Arm's Way (I love it, sue me) - Islands s/t - Felice Brothers Attack and Release - Black Keys Red Star EP - Third Eye Blind (Apparently I am a 13 year old girl from the mid-nineties) Last Tycoon - Peter Moren In the Ever - Mason Jennings Midnight Organ Fight - Frightened Rabbit s/t - The Kin
Plus M83, Bon Iver, and Fleet Foxes, as you mentioned.
My three problems are thus: One, I spent most of the year listening to some of the stellar release of last year (The National, LCD Soundsystem, Los Campasinos, Sea Wolf) that I didnt really play catchup this year. Two, this year wasnt really overflowing with great new releases as the past couple of years have been. Maybe that's cause I'm getting older, but I was really left wanting more. Third, I don't listen to music too much anymore. If it isnt playing on the car-ride to/from work, or whilst I'm on last.fm or browsing the net, it's a bit out of my field of vision. And a fourth problem (yes, not just three) is that I always find myself unable to make a top ten list without feeling a bit dirty. I'm either throwing things in as filler, or I'm neglecting some great stuff. So when I do make an official post it will be my "top whatever" list of '08, cause I'm a dirty whore like that.
By the way...tell me what that website is again, where I can "procure" some new, worthwhile music. You wrote it down, I lost it, and now I'm sad.
top 10 lists piss me off too, because i completely left out Stars, She & Him, and Islands. i actually spent a lot of time (most of it at work) thinking about this list, and i thought i didn't forget anything. ugh, oh well. also, to be honest, i had to look up a lot of the release dates for the albums. i couldn't believe some of them came out in 2008. i know what you mean about not listening to music enough. i used to be really diligent with trying to find new bands - reading a lot of music magazines and reaping all sorts of awesome from last.fm, but i've been slacking. i've come to accept it though; i feel like when you're ready for it, good music will find you when the time is right. like right now, i'm SUPER into the Pixies, especially Come on Pilgrim. i've had this album for years and never gave it that much time, but now it's all i crave. i don't question it, i just let it happen.
here's the site: http://community.livejournal.com/indie_exchange/profile you do need to join and be approved, but it's not hard to get into. it's kind of difficult to navigate at first, but once you get used to it, it's goddamned amazing.
by the way, those videos down there are epic. i have a hankering for Mario Kart 64 now like nobody's business.
