Playing FF:CC- Crystal Bearer with Shell yesterday got me thinking:

"Chocobo."

Now me, from the first moment I saw them in Final Fantasy VII, I pronounced it as "CHOCO- BOW" (Choko [Chocolate], bow [bow and arrows]). I couldn't see it as anything but. All of my friends at school said it the same way as I did. Then came Final Fantasy X, and suddenly the cast was calling them "Choke-a-bows", and it sounded absolutely, and utterly strange to me. Every single subsequent Final Fantasy since has used the word "Choke-a-bow".

It confuses me, because when I played my Japanese Dissidea, the Japanese voice cast used "Choco-bow" like I do, too. Makes me wonder; is it an American voice cast thing? Have they been told by the producer to pronounce it that way? Or is there a fundamental difference between the way that English, and Americans read that word? I find it oddly interesting, but then subtle language differences usually are.
