White People Food

Am barely able to stay conscious long enough to post this but had to share before it was forgotten.

My extern site is, with myself and a few Hispanic individuals as exceptions, employed and owned by individuals of a Middle Eastern descent. I am horrible at being able to guess which heritage anyone hails from and don't understand enough languages to pick up any clues from the language they are speaking to each other. I am mentioning this for the incident below to give readers a better idea of my perspective at the time of occurrence. I in no way have any issue with people of other cultures, just to be clear.

So I was asked to pull out this container of chili the chef had made and put about half of it on the stove to reheat and serve the staff, which I did of course. I didn't see when it was made, it was in there prior to my start there(yesterday was my 1st day), and I had already seen some not so up to code practices performed in that kitchen so there was no way in hell I was going to eat it.**

**For those that don't know, I have serious issues with food in this regard due to MULTIPLE food borne illnesses throughout my life. Learning about such illnesses and sanitary regulations in school probably didn't help matters much.

Anyways, I ramble when I'm exhausted...I was at the dish washing station when one of the serving staff came in. He was talking to the chef in the aforementioned language so I didn't think anything of it. Suddenly, the chef starting saying, quite loudly, "It's White People Food. White People! You know, 4th of July, White People Food. TEXAS, White People Food, 4th of July!" I looked back at them a bit astonished and the chef looked over and said, "Courtney? You love chili right?" Concerned that she was going to make me eat it I responded with, "Sometimes. I.....(quickly thinking about what I saw in it)..I'm not a big fan of corn in chili though, sorry chef." She didn't seem to notice that part and said to the server, "See, White People love this stuff!"

My only guess is that he understood less English than I could comprehend and so she felt the need to repeat and talk him into trying it. Regardless, it was one of the most awkward moments I've experienced as a "White Person."
