the only thing the world around, that shines bright enough to provide assistance to a troubled traveler's voyage through the dark, is the star pathway that extends into the breathless glare of space...

i was lucky to be alone this night, for the jungle was restless and any extra noise would have landed me in heaven or hell.
laying low was something i excelled at, and tonight i just happened to be doing so in a tree. an irony of situation.
the peak i wished to venture to was too far away. that is to say, i was never going to make it without being caught. the shadows were plentiful, but it was only a select few that worried me. the ones without attachments, physical bodies. the ones searching for a soul to corrupt, a soul they couldn't have - mine or any others that happened to roam by the area unawares.

i checked my sundial watch, to the realization that it was night, and doing so would provide me with little answer as to what the time was. and as logic fell into place, so did my body, through the tree and into the foliage below.
the stinging pain was the result of the knowledge that i would soon be found. or was it the sharp metal hoop around my leg?
sending a whirlpool of sorrow through the shadow's arm and into his heart took up almost all the energy i would need to make it to the star shrine ahead.

'jumping into action' was a phrase that sounded nice but was out of my reach, so i did the next best thing, shaking the hoop from my foot and hobbling to my feet.
after a period of a few frantic seconds the shadows writhed high above the trees, their opaque forms visible thanks to the light of the stars.

"look at him," i scraped enough energy together to call a coarse few words at the shifting shadows.
my arm pointed unsteadily towards a flickering sheet of purple blue, the shadow i had shocked with the blast of emotion.
"the sadness is a power of mine," they whined in momentary group contemplation of the fact that i might be their demise, "and it's use i make frequent and unhindered towards those who oppose my plight."

the night sky dragged a weathered sun up from the dirt of the earth, and the shadows turned long enough for me to jolt them back into attention with a final warning.
"the sun is a good friend. your place behind rocks and trees will soon become apparent, less you fall away from me"
the sincerity in my eyes bore straight into their hidden half-souls. they collapsed into the shadows of dust and sand as i broke into a run and instant sweat, away from my soon-to-have-been and still highly prominent captors.

the sun was a resort of the final kind. it had not been in plan A to call upon its saving glow. as it rose, the stars began to shimmer in a fading sort of way, and as my foot touched ground instead of star i thought my time was through. but luck appeared as a shooting star, who had lagged behind and was kind enough to take me by surprise in an allowance of me to board its waiting self.

it was large enough to take my full body span - a fortunate thing when stars can come in all manner of shape and size, often to the point where limbs may be hanging from the edges without ridges for support - and as it rose away from the mischievous sun i held my breath in wait of atmospheric outpact...
