A night of new bands...

We headed out to the Bottom Lounge tonight to see The Red Hot Valentines, Jamison Parker, and Motion City Soundtrack.

We got there late because of traffic and parking, so we pretty much missed the opening band (I think their name was Attention?). From the last few songs that we heard, I don't think we missed too much though.

The Red Hot Valentines played after Attention, which suprised me because I thought they would have played right before MCS. But despite their short set, they were adorable. Normally I don't like bands with keyboards, but they were pretty good. Thank you mentalwhoosh for telling me that I needed to go an RHV show - I think I'm hooked now =O)

Jamison Parker, a band I had read much about on the Saraphine board, was next. As Aaron said, they're Dashboard Confessional with electric guitars. They were alright, very emo. But they were all pretty young, so you got to give them credit for touring at such a young age. The singer was only 22 (or so he told a girl in the audience who wanted to marry him). Aaron had me cracking up with his comparison of Jamison and Mitch:

Singer: I'll be quiet now so I can tune my guitar
Aaron: He can't talk and tune his strings at the same time?
Me: Apparently not.
Aaron: Mitch can do like fifteen things and tune his guitar at the time.
Me: I keep telling you that Mitch is a god.
Aaron: He (Mitch) managed to stretch new strings, in the freezing cold (literally), sing a song, and tune. All while being mad.

Of course, Mitch has been doing the whole performing thing probably longer than the singer of Jamison Parker has even been alive. =O)

Motion City Soundtrack was after Jamison. Inbetween sets, we saw Phil in the back of the hall. Aaron snuck up on him and tackled him (because Phil always mauls Aaron). We passed the down time talking to Phil about MCS, photoshoots, and the merits and downfalls of happyendings. When we began talking about Phil learning to do flips with his guitar for shows, MCS came onstage, so we had to ditch him for a spot closer to the stage.

The crowd was mostly there for Motion City Soundtrack, which I found suprising. The Red Hot Valentines are from here, so I would have thought that they had a larger local following. But continuing... I thought they were good. They had incredible energy; it was a very interesting show to watch. Musically, they reminded me a little of Weezer...I suppose that also could have been because of their image. But regardless, it was worth actually paying to see the show.

After the show, we froze our butts of with the rocking E-town girls. Between Augie, Tommy, Phil, Aaron and I, and the E-town girls, we made sure everyone at the show had at least one flyer for the Metro show. There were so many of us, we kind of bombarded people. Haha. That's ok, maybe they'll remember to go to the show now.

Most of the people had left the venue when a drunk homeless man approached us. He was trying to sell those little papers that you can normally get for free. After he finally believed that we didn't want a paper, he began harassing Tommy. In one of the most classic moves ever, we see Tommy looking around for Augie. Tommy pointed Augie out to the drunk man; the next thing we know, he's heading straight for Augie. This game of "pass the homeless guy" continued for a while, with the man bouncing between Augie and Tommy.

Augie: Dude, I don't have any money, I'm in a band.
Homeless Man: (in a drunken, slurred tone) I play drums, need a drummer?
Augie: Nope, we got a drummer. He's over there *points to Tommy*
*homeless man goes over to Tommy and says something*
Tommy: *pointing to Augie* And that's our bassist!
*homeless man returns*

Anyway, I need to sleep some. I have a ton of things to do tomorrow: laundry, finish the SR pictures and the happyendings pictures, grade papers, Chistmas shop and go to round 4 of Lesson and Carols.
