She tip toed into the bedroom carefully stepping over the mess the cats had made. She knew it needed to be picked up but it could also wait until morning. Her boyfriend lay in bed, naked and sprawled out with the sheets in a tangled mess around his legs. He had gone to bed a few hours earlier but her mind was racing too much for her to have joined him. The room was hot, even with the window wide open and the crisp breeze blowing through the screen. She slipped off her pajama pants and climbed into bed wearing only her underwear and tank top. The thought of turning on the air crosses her mind as she lays there burning up but being to lazy to move she ops to leave it off. Her boyfriend rolls over incidentally throwing an arm over her stomach and pulls himself close. He nuzzles her neck and whispers “I love you” in attempts to get comfortable. She lays there, thinking but his snoring breaks her thoughts. Now she really can’t get to sleep so her eyes start to graze the room. Then she stops at the closet. A sudden fear comes over her as she notices a tall dark shadow between the door and the bookshelf. Normally her boyfriend turns out the light and sleeps on the outside of the bed, but not tonight. Had this mysterious shadow always slouched in the corner or was this the first night it came? Whatever the reason was for it being there, it was there. Standing in the darkness, lurking. She rolled over, turning her back to the door, the closet and the unknown in the corner. It had to be in her imagination; it wasn’t really there. She closed her eyes tightly trying to force herself into falling sleeping but the eerie thoughts raced through her mind. Not now, not tonight, she needed to sleep. She could feel a t hot breath blowing on the back of her neck as she heard her named called out “Rebecca, Rebecca”. She could only imagine what was behind her, what thing was trying to get her attention. Not tonight raced through her mind, not tonight.
“Rebecca, Rebecca. Turn around. Talk to me”, the voiced crackled with every syllable spoken.
“ No. Leave me alone”, she whispers. “Just leave me alone.”
“Rebecca”
She laid there fists clenching the sheet trying not to turn around, she knew, she knew what was back there. A woman, old, tattered and torn. Oh yeah dead! Rebecca knew that it was still there from the stale breath breathing on her neck not to mention the smell of rotten flesh lingering in the air.
“Rebecca”
“What!” as she turns over, coming face to face with her intruder. The woman jerked upright, body lip and barley hanging above the floor. She started to twitch and shake as she flew back attached to an invisible conveyor belt pulling her through the bedroom door stopping short of the linen closet. The woman hung there, head slummed over, body dangling, just blowing in the wind. Silence. Rebecca starred wide-eyed at the corpse, the corpse that use to be a living breathing woman. What had happen to her, why had she died?
