You know what's sad?
The one thing DC is incredibly streamlined at is its income tax forms. Part-year resident? No problem, fill in the oval and multiply everything by this handy little percentage. done.
California? I think they're trying to keep people in-state simply by the gravitational pull of the tax forms. Part-year resident? Here's a new form, plus a two-page worksheet and pro-rated tax table. And you'll need to do every calculation twice, once as if you'd been here all year, once for how long you've actually been here. And attach supporting documentation, too, just in case. Have fun deciding where to mail this puppy in....
Not that I'll actually get my refund from California. I fully expect payment in the form of an autographed picture of the govinator. Which actually might be kinda cool.
