Man oh man, where do I even start?
So for all of those who remember, I had posted an entry, requesting everyone to vote for Kyle in the "Reno 911!" contest. And well......thanks to everyone, Kyle won! The grand prize was a free trip to Cali, where the winner and a guest were put up in nice accomodations, then driven out to where they were filming for the show. There, the winner got a walk-on role in one of the episodes.
The accomodations turned out to be the Four Seasons Hotel on Wilshire and Rodeo in Beverly Hills. It was absolutely GORGEOUS, and at one point, we saw Vanna White get out of a car and go into the bar. Not to mention, we couldn't go anywhere without seeing either a Lotus, Ferrari, or Lambourghini.
But anyway, on Friday they drove us out to the set. It was pouring that day, so the Reno Police force finally got to use their rain slickers in an episode. All the guys were there for the shoot, and Wendy later on (she plays Clemmie). For everyone who's a fan, they shoot the show in various locations of California. If you go about an hour outside of Los Angeles, it definitely resembles a very desert-like setting.
Upon reaching the set, David (who is an editor for the show and the go-to guy) sent us over to grab some breakfast, and then took us out to the set to meet the guys. I remember when "The State" came out on MTV and I was watching Tom, and Ben for the first time. Who would've thought that about 12-13 years later, I would meet them. I think Kyle and I probably made them feel a little old when they took a look at us and we were making State references. Yet I have to say, they are the most down-to-earth guys I have met. Very friendly, very accomodating, yet very serious about their work. I highly suggest everyone watch at least one Reno episode and keep these things in mind:
1) they come up with the show idea
2) they completely ad-lib all their scenes
3) they also direct it
Carlos (Garcia) and Cedric (Jonesy) were also there, and just as friendly. While we were standing around, Carlos came up to us and said "I don't think we've met. Hi, I'm Carlos....." and then shook our hands. It was definitely something I wasn't expecting to happen at all. Dietrich Bader was also on set, because he will be in one of the episodes next season. And let me tell you, he's taller than Kyle. It was also cool to get to talk with him for a little while.
I think the greatest part, especially for Kyle, was getting to talk with Tom, who plays Lt. Jim Dangle on the show. Tom not only seemed impressed that Kyle won a Halloween Costume Contest with a Dangle costume, but also the fact that Kyle asked him for his Lt. rank bars off his uniform for when he gets commissioned at graduation. Ben kept saying "that's badass" when he heard that, and Tom seemed floored and honored to give them to him.
By the end of Friday, after a 15 hour day on the set, Kyle and I left with a lot of great memories of the day, and a profound respect for what these guys do. But I do suggest, WATCH SEASON 5!!!! It looks to be absolutely hysterical!
On Saturday, before our flight, Kyle and I went sightseeing. In a matter of 7-8 hours, we managed to go to Venice Beach and walk along that strip up to Santa Monica Pier. We then stopped for sushi on the pier and ordered a California Roll in California. After that, we ventured up to the 3rd St. Promenade, where we grabbed a cab and went over to Graumann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. At some point, if we go back, I want to see a movie in that theater. It was amazing. I also got to put my hands in Marilyn Monroe's handprints in front of the theater, as well as Elizabeth Taylor's handprints. After the theater tour, we caught a glimpse of the Hollywood sign. Effectively, we had seen everything we wanted to see by that point, so upon reaching the hotel to wait, we then walked down Rodeo Drive for a while before our limo got there. I ended up buying a pair of sunglasses at Anthropologie, so I officially got something in the shopping district.
By the time we reached the airport, the both of us were exhausted beyond belief, but excited that we got to check out the west coast for a couple of days.
At some point, I plan to post pictures. But for now, the story will suffice.
