045. claustrophobia ; dongwoo/woohyun
Dongwoo likes to be close to people; if he was within five feet of a person he is most likely touching them, an arm around their shoulders, a hand on their thigh. Intimacy is common, and the actual meaning of the word is vague.
Woohyun enjoys large, open spaces where he has room to breathe. Though the dorm always feels cramped and uncomfortable to all of them, Woohyun is the one who feels like he is suffocating because the room is suddenly too small and too hot.
So when Woohyun finds himself in a closet jammed up against Dongwoo, he is halfway to fainting.
“Woohyun-ah,” Dongwoo whispers. “You okay?” He places one hand on Woohyun’s hip and the other arm wraps around the younger boy’s waist.
There is not enough air in the closet, and there needs to be an air conditioner or else Woohyun was going to die at the far-too-young age of 20. “Claustrophobia,” he chokes out breathily.
“What?”
“Claustrophobia. Fear of small…spaces…”
Yet Dongwoo pulls Woohyun closer until there is no space between them from their chests to their hips. Woohyun’s breath is already ragged and this really is not helping.
“Dongwoo…why are we even in here.”
Dongwoo flashes that irresistible, innocent smile and says, “Because you have claustrophobia.”
“What the fuck.”
“If you want to be with me…you’re going to have to get over this claustrophobia, Nam Woohyun.”
052. suffocate ; myungsoo/hoya
Hoya is the talented one, the charismatic one, the triple threat. He knows he is good, and though he’s most certainly not the type to rub it in others’ faces, Myungsoo feels like he might as well do just that.
Myungsoo is the face of the group; naturally everything is centred around his looks. Maybe the company took a bit off from that when they gave him more lines and forced him to improve his vocal ability.
Even with more lines, Hoya still owns the stage. He has a captivating factor that Myungsoo cannot match. So the pretty face doesn’t cut it.
He knows Hoya does not mean to do this; Hoya loves the team and thinks equally.
But whenever he stands next to Hoya, Myungsoo can’t help but feel choked by the man’s presence. All the air, all of everything, is taken up by Lee Howon, and it is all Myungsoo can do not to suffocate.
084. breath ; woohyun/hoya
When Woohyun feels like the world is going to crash down around him, he runs. He thinks maybe, if he runs long enough and far enough, life might be lighter. It doesn’t work, but he does it anyway.
Pressure is Woohyun’s greatest challenge and perfection may be his greatest flaw. He feels everyone’s expectations of him and tries so hard, maybe too hard, to meet all of them, and when he can’t, he goes out to run off the frustration of not being perfect. Others unconsciously expect some kind of perfection; doing pretty well is not good enough. Only perfection is good enough and Woohyun doesn’t think he’ll ever reach it.
The members are used to it now. If Woohyun screwed up during practise he will go home with them and immediately leave again to run. They don’t know how far he runs, but more often than not he returns after most of them are asleep.
The only one who has been awake to hear Woohyun return is Hoya. Sunggyu is Woohyun’s best friend, but Hoya finds a link between himself and the younger main vocalist. Hoya’s ambition is unending, and in a way he strives for perfection as well. Maybe Hoya is better at managing the stress, or maybe he is keeping it pent up and eventually the store will explode and he will break.
Both are afraid of that breaking point, the one moment where everything is too much and nothing they do is possibly enough.
So one day Woohyun hears steps behind him as he runs, and when he turns around he sees Hoya. He doesn’t greet him, but he understands.
They run together, along the Han River, past boundaries, just trying to wash away all their worries. Eventually their breaths and steps synchronise, and if one were to listen, they would here a single breath, in and out, in and out.
