Fanmix: Standing in the Light (Eowyn/Faramir)

Medium: Book/Movie
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Subject: Eowyn/Faramir
Title: Standing in the Light
Notes: I added both book and movie quotes to hopefully better explain the songs I chose.

Eowyn and Faramir are my absolute favorite couple from the LOTR trilogy. It's a shame that the third movie only portrayed their relationship for 30 seconds in the extended edition, cutting all their best dialogue and the kiss on the forehead to boot. But in making this mix, I reread my favorite bits of theirs in the book, and I hope that for those of you who've never gotten the chance to pick up the book, that these quotes will inspire you to take a closer look at them and maybe read it. I also included some movie quotes where they seemed to fit. :) Enjoy. Please comment and let me know what you think, if there's any problems with the song files, etc.

"Shall I always be chosen?" she said bitterly. "Shall I always be left behind when the Riders depart, to mind the house while they win reknown, and find food and beds when they return?"

"A time may soon come," said he, "when none shall return. Then there will be a need of valour without renown, for none shall remember the deeds that are done in the last defence of your homes. Yet the deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised." ~ Eowyn and Aragorn

Wild Horses - Natasha Bedingfield
Eowyn

"You wish now that our places had been exchanged. That I had died and Boromir had lived."

"Yes, I wish that."

"Since you are robbed of Boromir, I will do what I can in his stead. If I should return, think better of me, Father."

"That will depend on the manner of your return." ~ Faramir and Denethor

Loser - 3 Doors Down
Faramir

"But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death."

"What do you fear, lady?" he asked.

"A cage," she said. "To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire." ~ Eowyn and Aragorn

Not a Pretty Girl - Ani DiFranco
Eowyn

"Then, Eowyn of Rohan, I say to you that you are beautiful. In the valleys of our hills there are flowers fair and bright, and maidens fairer still; but neither flower nor lady have I seen till now in Gondor so lovely, and so sorrowful. It may be that only a few days are left ere the darkness falls upon our world, and when it comes I hope to face it steadily; but it would ease my heart, if while the Sun yet shines, I could see you still." ~ Faramir

In the Light - Full Blown Rose
Eowyn, to Faramir

Now Aragorn knelt beside Faramir, and held a hand upon his brow. And those that watched felt that some great struggle was going on. For Aragorn's face grew grey with weariness; and ever and anon he called the name of Faramir, but each time more faintly to their hearing, as if Aragorn himself was removed from them, and walked afar in some dark vale, calling for one that was lost.

But Aragorn came to Eowyn, and he said: "Here there is a grievous hurt and a heavy blow. The arm that was broken has been tended with due skill, and it will mend in time, if she has the strength to live."

"I understand his passing is hard to accept, especially now that your brother has deserted you."

"Leave me alone you snake!"

"Oh, but you are alone! Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness. In bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, like a hutch to trammel some wild thing in." ~ Eowyn and Grima

Loneliest Girl in the World - Cary Brothers
Faramir, to Eowyn

"When I first looked upon her and perceived her unhappiness, it seemed to me that I saw a white flower standing straight and proud, shaped as a lily, and yet knew that it was hard, as if wrought by elf-wrights out of steel. Or was it, maybe, a frost that had turned its sap to ice, and so it stood, bitter-sweet, still fair to see, but stricken, soon to fall and die?" ~ Aragorn

The Tower - Vienna Teng
Eowyn

"And I love you. Once I pitied your sorrow. But now, were you sorrowless, without fear or any lack, were you the blissful Queen of Gondor, still I would love you. Eowyn, do you not love me?"

Then the heart of Eowyn changed, or else at last she understood it. And suddenly her winter passed, and the sun shone on her.

You Are Loved (Don't Give Up) - Josh Groban
Faramir, to Eowyn

"The city has fallen silent. There is no warmth left in the sun. It grows so cold." ~ Eowyn

Ivory Tower - Blackmore's Night
Eowyn, to Faramir

"Seven days," said Faramir. "But think not ill of me, if I say to you: they have brought me both a joy and a pain that I never thought to know. Joy to see you; but pain, because now the fear and doubt of this evil time are grown dark indeed. Eowyn, I would not have this world end now, or lose so soon what I have found."

In the Middle - Theory of a Deadman
Faramir, to Eowyn

"Lose what you have found, lord?" she answered; but she looked at him gravely and her eyes were kind. "I know not what in these days you have found that you could lose. But come, my friend, let us not speak of it! Let us not speak at all! I stand upon some dreadful brink, and it is utterly dark in the abyss before my feet, but whether there is any light behind me I cannot tell. For I cannot turn yet. I wait for some stroke of doom."

Last Night on Earth - Delta Goodrem
Eowyn, to Faramir

"The reason of my waking mind tells me that a great evil has befallen and we stand at the end of days. But my heart says nay; and all my limbs are light, and a hope and a joy are come to me that no reason can deny. Eowyn, Eowyn, White Lady of Rohan, in this hour I do not believe that any darkness will endure!" And he stooped and kissed her brow.

And so they stood on the walls of the City of Gondor, and a great wind rose and blew, and their hair, raven and golden, streamed out mingling in the air. And the Shadow departed, and the Sun was unveiled, and light leapt forth.

"Then must I leave my own people, man of Gondor?" she said. "And would you have your proud folk say of you: 'There goes a lord who tamed a wild shieldmaiden of the North! Was there no woman of the race of Numenor to choose?'"

"I would," said Faramir. And he took her in his arms and kissed her under the sunlit sky, and he cared not that they stood high upon the walls in the sight of many. And many indeed saw them and the light that shone about them as they came down from the walls and went hand in hand to the Houses of Healing.

And to the Warden of the Houses Faramir said: "Here is the Lady Eowyn of Rohan, and now she is healed."

Faramir, to Eowyn

"Hear then all my guests, fair folk of many realms, such as has never before been gathered in this hall! Faramir, Steward of Gondor, and Prince of Ithilien, asks that Eowyn Lady of Rohan should be his wife, and she grants it full willingly. Therefore they shall be trothplighted before you all." ~ Eomer

And Faramir and Eowyn stood forth and set hand in hand; and all there drank to them and were glad.
