I recently reinstalled Zone Alarm Firewall and it's slowing down my internet like mad and it really seems to dislike click-able links. I was just using Windows Firewall until recently, but I don't really trust it to do a good enough job.

I've used COMODO in the past, so I may try that one again, but does anyone have any other free Firewall ( Read more... )

Hm, I use Zone Alarm and so far have only had a problem with it when I used to have Norton anti-virus (you don't happen to be using Norton, do you?). They got into a death-match and completely locked up my computer until I could eject one of them through Safe Mode. >:[

Anyway, I don't suppose ZA will let you have the previous version of itself (I hate how most things insist you have the latest version, even though that sounds like a good plan if you can't use the latest version for a compatibility reason, then you're just out of luck :( )?

You might try checking ZA's user forum here: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/community/user-forum-agreement.htm (have to just agree to their terms to get in) and see if anybody else has had this problem. Also you might try googling something like "Zone Alarm, slow Internet" and any other security programs you might have that could be interfering and see if anything pops up. Anything that operates with real time protection can end up clashing with a firewall, which also operates in real time (as opposed to some security programs that only are active when you run them, like spybot killing programs ;) ).

Anyway, since you were asking for recs for other free firewalls, not ways to try to salvage ZA, I'll stop here. ;) I do know of some people who think it's fine just to use the Windows firewall but I don't trust it and I like having a full firewall that guards for things trying to get out as well as in (at least if they make it in, you can try to stop them from contacting their Supreme Commander o_O out there). Good luck, hon! I hope you find something that works for you soon! *hugs* ♥!

Hmm, while I didn't get any warnings on installation, this post seems to suggest it may be an incompatibility between AVG and ZA. Weird. Shall thinky on it more on the weekend. Maybe I can install an older version or something...

Thanks for the advice.
