wojelah "In most self-portraits it is the face that dominates...."
In most self-portraits it is the face that dominates, however, as Evan Lorne surveyed his students’ art, he was somewhat surprised that this adage didn’t seem to hold true in his classroom.
The painting of Mr Dex was a roughly drawn, almost angry-looking sketch done in basic black. The man’s deep sad eyes looked out from a veil of hair that obscured the rest of his features, but it was swords and knives that attracted the viewer’s attention, their sharp edges criss-crossing the painting and tinged with a blood red. Sad eyes and weapons of war.
Ms Emmagan’s painting was rendered in Earthy colours, lending a homey feel. She had painted herself in full body, dressed in traditional clothing and standing in a hut. But she stood half in shadow and half in light, highlighted by shafts of light that emanated from somewhere unseen. The artificial glow seemed an intrusion on the idyllic setting.
Dr McKay’s painting was in fact dominated by his face, with shafts of golden light surrounding him like a halo and a medal hanging proudly about his neck. A superior little grin highlighted his face and his bright blue gaze seemed to stare out at the world. Lorne smiled, moving on to his final student’s work.
John Sheppard’s painting was of the classroom they were standing in now. John was front and center in the painting, but only just. He stood akimbo, hands loosely at his sides, but his head was turned, as if on guard, one eye on his classmates behind him. His own image seemed almost fuzzy - dark shirt, pants and wristbands - where his classmates were full colour, crisp and clear.
Yeah, Evan Lorne’s class was anything but usual.
