“…if this world is wearing thin,”
Chicago takes many things away from people. It takes freedom, love, friends. Every Wanderer that passes through the Rift will bear the nasty brunt of it. One city can take so much. People have different attitudes towards this, different ways in which they cope. Some try to move on, rebuild their lives against the odds. Others are trapped, consumed by their loss.
“…cause when you sleep at night, they don’t hear you cries in your own world.”
Cassie tries to move on from what she’s lost. She rebuilds her life one small step at a time. Her friends and family are never replaced - but expanded. And in this awful city, she gains new friends and family members. But there are some days when she has her slip ups. When the crippling loss hits her and she cries for her family. She cries for what’s not there anymore, for the fact she’s disappeared on them. But what does she do to stop her family disappearing on her?
“…in the silence of your room. in the darkness of your dreams.”
She’s been looking for Saul. She knows that he’s gone and she can’t do anything. There’s nothing that can be done, but wait. She misses him more than anything, because he’s her family. He’s the one thing that makes her feel like she’s home. The joy, the life of London, even the grittiest and darkest parts of their city - Saul reminds her of it. Without him, the world seems very lonely and quiet. There’s no London. Nothing. It’s a very sad and frightening thought at how fast she seems to be losing them her family here. First Robin, then Iris.. and now Saul.
And she’s powerless to do anything to stop it. But she knows she can’t let herself dwell on that too much. She pushes the worries, the dark thoughts away. Mournful thoughts are vulnerable things.
“…stay with me.”The rats miss him too. She’s heard it on the journals that they’re fretting over him, but even can Cassie can feel it in her own way. She sits in alleyways, cupping her hands - letting swirls of shadow twist in the air about her. And slowly, the rats head towards her. They recognize it - the darkness, good magic. They recognize her relationship with their boss in a way; see her as something similar despite being almost another world apart. They like the comfort in the darkness magic she has. So they scurry and curl up at her feet, sniffing and squeaking. Cassie says nothing; she just sits - staring at her hands. She’s content knowing someone feels comforted and safe. That’s what she likes to think, anyway.
“..only time will tell if you can break the spell …stay with me.”
So she waits, she’s patient. She’ll wait for him to come back, because she knows in her heart that he can come back. He’s one that can come back. And when that day comes, he’ll be able to stay. She hopes.
