Truck lands in river; occupants missing the next morning

PORT CLINTON, Pa. (AP) -- Occupants of a pickup truck that landed in the Schuylkill River remained missing early Monday morning, the day after the accident, state police said.

A few inches of water covered Route 61 early Sunday afternoon when the northbound truck crossed the southbound lanes and went through the guardrails.

"I stopped my car, but he was already gone," witness Mike Bretzik said. "Whoever he was, he was in a hurry."

Witnesses estimated that the truck was going about 65 mph at the time it went into the river.

It was unclear how many people were in the truck when it went into the river. Witnesses told police they had seen two people floating in the river, but they were not found Sunday, and state police called off the search at nightfall.

State police said late Sunday that they had identified the registered owner of the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado, but they did not release that person's name because the family had not been notified. Also, police said they were not sure if the truck's owner was among the victims.

I was at work Sunday, directly down the road from where the truck went in. I was the one that called 911 about it. It was sad. They caught the truck under the bridge in Port Clinton. We also saw the helicopter searching the water with the thermal imaging equiptment. The brige was full of fire trucks, police, flashing lights, rescue boats, and divers. It's so sad. You know, whenever you see those vehicles floating in the water on TV, you always think it looks fake or staged. But it's not. It really does look like that. I don't think I'll ever forget that sight...a white pick-up truck floating down the river, bobbing up and down, with something white (which was probably the people) floating in it, bobbing up and down too. Just like on TV.
