Are Angel caps worse to work with than btvs caps or about the same? I don't know why i imagine they'd have better image quality.
I've been trying to throw a few more muted icons in my sets lately to break up all the colors
As a lover of the muted I say brava, you did a great job!
You know I have the opposite problem - remembering to use color when my default mode is to go to sepia/muted. I lol'd at sepia and retro as themes because those aren't themes they're my M.O.! I think my two best icons this round had the best color clarity.
more so in 2 & 5 because they just fit so well with Angel and Wes.
Because I haven't seen the series I simply assumed that the other three were meaningful in some way, but it's the Angel and Wes icons that definitely stick with me. Your set pushed me to try not to put ornaments just for the sake of the pretty but to have some meaning; I didn't always succeed though.
Is it wrong to admit I went with the easiest option for that ;)
Are you kidding? Hey, I chose a movie starring SMG, so you're preaching to the converted here. Nothing wrong with making our lives easier and I think it adds to the humor.
but after reading a few text guides by other makers I've started to use text as a decoration more and more
They're about the same. The main issue is that they are very dark and can be hard to brighten up.

Yeah I admit I still do just put decoration for the pretty most of the time myself. But when I found these textures I found they fit pretty well for the characters :P
There are guides?
Oh yeah. There's a big annual Ask The Maker thing at icon_talk - they put a master post together with all the requests to make it easier. Plus a few makers have tutorials and guides when people request them.
I quite often refer to them (even just for inspiration)
Since I don't use PS that's pretty much how I work anyway because I can't always "follow along" all the steps. But that's how I learned to cook and not rely on cookbooks as well - now I glance at a couple of recipes and swing in my own direction and it usually works. (Notice I didn't say "always".)
Thanks again hon! It's nice to see other people have done some of the things I'm thinking about and realizing I don't have to re-invent the wheel.
