Walmart
They're trying to build a Walmart store (maybe even just a small one) where FEED is now. They have been in talks for a year now, and I just attended a community meeting about it. I would love to continue meeting with these people, because Ukrainian Village does not need a Walmart. I don't want to lose my job because they are tearing it down. I am a little disappointed noone from my work showed up at this meeting.. meaning if I hadn't FEED would look like a big ole douchebag. The owner of the bar next door has known the Alderman for years apparently, so were hinging on his involvement in convincing him not to do it. We are researching and mapping and canvassing. I may not be in Chicago forever, but Its my home, and I refuse to hand it over. The one problem is the land owner who owns the majority of our lot... One man owns the two buildings the Bar and restaurant are in, and the 3/4 acre l;eft is another gentleman.. who refers to his vacant lot community garden as his "walmart"... Thats not good.
