30 Day Song Challenge, Part 14: "A Song That No One Would Expect You To Love"

Apr 07, 2011 05:26

This is a tough one because my taste is pretty eclectic and, let's face it, I'm a bit of a music nerd so nothing that I like should really surprise anyone. :P After all, I'm old enough to at least vaguely remember disco songs when they were new, we were early cable recipients of MTV and I got all that British New Wave stuff in the 80's and loved it, embraced hair metal like it was going out of fashion, and I even dug some of the grunge bands with no staying power (I'm looking at you Candlebox!). NOTHING should be a surprise!

So I think I'll go with one that shouldn't be really surprising but just how much I love it might surprise.

I am not a huge Matchbox Twenty fan and I've had no use for Rob Thomas' solo work, except for this song that he cut for a nice little Disney movie (Meet The Robinsons) I took the kids to years ago. When and how it is used in the movie itself actually made me cry (shut up!) and a few years ago I put it on a mix CD for Kel who fell in insta-love with it.

There is just something really simple and powerful in the lyric that always sends me to a very life affirming place and it makes me think of my sons without fail. Someday they're going to grow up and they're going to move out and I will be happy that things are falling into the natural order of life but I will miss them so much. And I just know I'll need this song to get through those days. :)

Anyway, probably not a shocking selection but I love this song beyond rational thought.
