Rumsfeld Out

Nov 08, 2006 09:59

Donald Rumsfeld is stepping down as Defense Secretary. That didn't take long. You don't even have to guess as to whether or not he fell or if he was pushed. President Bush will still have to demonstrate that he "got the message" but, to his credit, this is good first step.

In other news, Montana is done deal and it would took a lot for George Allen to overcome the vote tally in Virginia. At the end of the day -- literally today -- I would expect that the Democratic majority in both houses of Congress will be official.

I've been watching national elections ever since I was old enough to vote and the only thing I can compare yesterday to is the 1994 midterms. Democrats and the Clinton White House got absolutely spanked that night. However, it was from that divided White House/Congress that President Clinton achieved his best accomplishments, won re-election, came out of an impeachment, and left office with a high approval rating. President Bush has an opportunity in this. I've seen no evidence that he has the wisdom or perspective to recognize that, let alone to act on it. But as an American, in spite of my overall negative opinion of this President, I am anxious for him to prove me wrong.
