10 unique things

OK, OK, lj-land, I give up.  I submit to the power of the lj meme.  It nearly had me with the "post what you read on line x of page y of the nearest book", just because what I got when I tried it was so shocking when taken out of context.

But everyone likes to feel unique, so the seductive pull of the "10 ( Read more... )

Wow! You're right--I haven't done any of those things. You don't tell nearly enough stories about yourself :)

You should have a chat with your doppleganger Neal Stephenson. He could use the material.

The problem with this meme is that as a game (which it kind of is), it doesn't work when people pile on the qualifiers and make things very very specific. For example, I bet nobody on my friends list has... attended a concert in Santa Cruz, that they just found out about earlier that day, while wearing a WBRS T-shirt. But that's silly. I've driven solo coast to coast across the US in 2 1/2 days, but the details are quite different.

So, aside from the game-like aspect of this meme, it's an encouragement to tell interesting things about yourself, which is nice as far as that goes. Unfortunately, it encourages brevity, since it's a list. If you're using it as an excuse to tell us interesting things about yourself, tell us the full stories! :)

(As I recall, you're quite a good storyteller)

Thank you. Of course I realized that adding qualifiers makes it easier to guarantee uniqueness. I suppose it does begin to verge on storytelling as details are added, though I included them more to add interest than to guarantee "winning".
Also, I'm kind of pleased to know someone else here has driven solo across the US in 2 1/2 days before. Not many people would even try that.

I've done it round-trip with a partner too, taking 54 hours from Boston to SF, and an amazing 49 hours from LA to Boston on the return - with a detour through Detroit!

Yeah, if I ever do this ten things meme, one of the items is gonna be, "lost count of how many times I've driven more than 1000 miles in a day". Although perhaps you've done that too :)

LA-Boston is a weird drive to do quickly in the spring or fall. You get a new season each day. This past October, I left LA one morning and by midmorning the sun was blazing and my AC was blasting. Two evenings later, I literally did not recognize the snow that was falling as I drove into Boston, for several minutes - it was dark, and I kept trying to figure out if it was rain why wasn't my windshield getting wet, or of it was some sort of dust coming off a truck in front of me.
