first of all, the people who train pitties to fight, train them to fight other dogs. any dog that shows human aggression is defective and should be euthanized. morons that breed pitties willy nilly end up getting these human aggressive dogs. not the dogs fault, the backyard breeder's fault. of course, they can also become human aggressive as a result of continued torture/abuse/neglect.
also, most pitties are NOT trained to fight at all. they are family pets. go to a shelter, the animals that are up for adoption have been through temperment tetsting. that means that NONE of them are aggressive or else the shelter wont adopt them out. aggressive pits are the exception, not the norm, and most are 'trained' to be pets, not to fight.
as for BSL (breed specific legislation) it's flawed. there are people out there that think it's amusing to watch dogs fight to the death. if they don't have pitties available, they'll move on to another breed (rotties, dobies, whatever) and fight THOSE dogs. as long as people exist that think it's amusing to fight dogs, there will always be fighting dogs. and cocks.
as for pit bulls, poor breeding (resulting in defective, human aggressive dogs) or abuse from humans, combined with their anatomy (big jaws, muscular bodies) has brought them a lot of strife. it's not their fault and the well behaved family pets should not be killed. chihuahuas probably bite people twice as often as pitties, but they never break the skin.
all dogs bite if they're scared or angry enough
basic common sense would fix the majority of dog bites. dont mess with the dog if it's eating or sleeping. dont piss it off. dont scare it. DONT LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENEDED WITH IT! etc. i hear these stories about dogs killing babies and it turns out the parents were in the other room napping or something. sigh.
