David Ehrenfeld and his wife took a trip to the Appalachian Mountains. On this weeklong trip, the newly weds enjoyed and took in all that nature has to offer. By backpacking on this mountain trail, Ehrenfeld found a new respect for what the world around us has given to offer. All the while gaining a bit of a resentment toward the human races adaptations they have created and imposed on themselves. In ‘Adaptation’, written by Ehrenfeld, these effects of our alterations in the world around us are brought to our attention.
Some of us see from day to day how often we need to call a guy to come repair something in our house, or on our computer. Or we need to go out and get something to replace something we bought about a week ago and have been broken. Things are just not holding up as well as they used to, and our capability has humans is slowly diminishing.  Ehrenfeld states the “we are adapting to enforced helplessness.” (236) He enforces this statement with examples much like the ones stated above, causing a stir of commonness in our minds. We’re used to having to go out and replace junk, and calling on others to fix that which we know nothing about but use day to day.  This common action in daily life adds a since of logic to his statements.
