The morning was cool and new, optimistic by far with the promise of another day of fair weather. It had been just a few days since Adrasteia had overheard the conversation about cargo and destination. Although her enthusiasm was bottled up, masked by her recent normality of quiet contempt and contemplation, she could not deny in her heart that she was excited to visit the land of her mothers birth, despite the unfortunate happenings that had caused her journey. The only depressing thoughts lingered on the fact the trip could not have been made with her mother and brother. Adrasteia could remember clearly, the fun and games her and Manethas Tothmoses would play, pretending to be in Egypt. Some days it would be dignitaries, other days it would be monarchs, often enough they would adopt the history their names bore which their mother had given them to honor great rulers of Egypts past. A good game to play was to see who could come up with the most sacred names, they would shoot titles at each other, the kicker was when Manethas would use ’Mighty Bull,’ since a woman Pharaoh could not claim such a thing. That was until one day it had occurred to Adrasteia to mock it by Minoaizing it. Eventually it became an inside joke for the two, the Mighty Bull jumper, it was huge entraining thought to see some Egyptian king attempting to leap a bull.
They never did tell their mother the joke, for they could guess what she would think of it.
Looking up and into the distance, Adrasteia spotted a tiny dot floating through the air. Others soon caught glimpse of it and one could tell the crew was suddenly restless. There was an unspoken, unseen energy spreading across the ship. Even Adrasteia, whom didn’t make long trips across the sea knew what the bird in the distance meant, always there were stories in the ports told about how many days men would be at sea before catching a glimpse of a bird as their salvation. Seeing a bird a sailor knew he were not far from land, even if he could not see it. This sighting was both a blessing and a curse for Adrasteia, knowing that she was close to her possible escape rout, but that their would probably be more pain and very soon before she would reach it.
It wasn’t long after when the first of the men, keen on sight, made the announcement that their destination was within sight. Many of the men left their oars to try and look, but only a few could make out the outline in the distance. Adrasteia could, faintly, her eyes were quite sharp, although from this distance nothing more than an unknown shape could be discovered. It was then that a firm hand was laid upon her should from behind.
She froze and waited a moment, perfectly still, until the giant spoke, “It’s time lady.”
“Time for what?” she replied, playing ignorant as she turned around hesitantly.
“We can’t have you running around loose while we’re doing business,” he grasped her by the wrist, “We’ll need to keep you restrained and below,” a filthy grin spread across his face.
Adrasteia tried to bolt, but his grip held firm. “No!” she shrieked as she pulled to try and break loose, but it was no use.
The Mycenean twisted her arm getting behind her as he grasped the other, pinning them together at her back. The captain came with ties and tied them tightly together.
“You’ll pay for this,” she shouted at them trying to fight against the binding, “I swear I’ll be the end of you!”
It was then that they decided to gag her as well, “While we’re in port we can’t have her screaming like that, people will notice.” The captain nodded in agreement.
Soon Adrasteia found herself below deck again, fuming as the crew celebrated their arrival at Pelusium.
