“You can’t say that to me anymore.”
“Carter, it’s a nickname, that’s all. What’s wrong with it?”
“Everything.” Sam shouted back frustrated.
“I like it.”
“It reminds me of how it used to be, before we got …you know…us.”
“And…” He raised his eyebrows as if he wanted to make a point.
“You can’t keep ordering me around. You’re not my commanding officer anymore.”
“I know.”
“Jack, we can’t keep this up. When you bark something at me, I automatically follow your order; I can’t change it from one day to the next. We worked like that for eight years”
Jack snorted. “You ignored my orders before.” Was it even possible to reason with this man?
“When it was necessary and the world depended on it.” Sam shot back at him.
“You give me orders too,” he added petulantly.
“When?”
“Do the dishes, put your clothes in the laundry basket instead of the ground…oh and you didn’t even let me travel back in time to watch the Cubs win the World Series…” Sam rolled her eyes and sighed, sometimes she wondered how he ever survived living on his own for nine years.
“That’s because otherwise this house would look more like a garbage dump than a house. I like everything to be clean and orderly. As for the time travel, it’s too dangerous. You know that!” He didn’t respond and sat down again. Sam saw that he was trying to keep his anger in check and that it was perhaps better that she went to bed and left him there. He would probably leave or so; they both had to get used to this change in their relationship. She’d had enough of the fighting.
“I’m going to bed.” And without waiting for a response she left for her bedroom.

A while later Sam heard some shuffling and felt someone sit down on the bed. She looked up and saw him facing her. She didn’t understand it, why hadn’t he left yet? She thought he would go back to work and leave her be for the time being. When they still worked together he would try to find a place to be alone so he could calm down.
“You still awake?” he whispered. She didn’t respond. “Look Carter, about earlier, I’m sorry.” After that he laid down in the bed and gathered her in his arms. She couldn’t stay angry at him; it was too hard, especially when he apologized. Jack almost never apologized; he was too stubborn for that.
For a moment Sam wasn’t able to say or do anything. She turned around to face him; “Jack, why are you here?” This had been their first fight since they had become a couple and Sam still didn’t knew the rules. It seemed like her entire relationship with Jack O’Neill had turned upside down. He was still the same man, but she had learned so many new things.
Jack waited a moment before answering her question and then through the dark into her eyes. “Always is always, Sam. I love you, not because of Carter, or your weird need to keep everything organized, including categorizing the bookshelf from A to Z, I love you because of who you are. ” She smiled faintly and he gave her a kiss hoping that everything would be okay for now. Sam snuggled a bit more into him and sighed. He said always, she should have known that he kept his promises.
“I love you too Jack” she waited for a second and added with a smile: “Always huh.”
“Yes Carter, always.” He grinned. She hit him softly on his bare chest. “Sam.” He corrected quickly. Sam widened her grin. It wasn’t easy to go from commanding officer and subordinate to lovers (was that actually a good definition for what they were?), but in the end it was all worth it.
“Goodnight Sam.” He said sleepily.
“Goodnight sir.” He deserved it. She felt him chuckle and soon she fell asleep peacefully in Jack’s arms.
He said always and he meant it.
