I’m dead. I’m dead, dead, dead, dead! But… it shall be a noble death! For the heart of my love!
At least that’s what he told himself. She was so quiet, so timid. Sain would approach her, and she’d flee. Or Lyn would touch the hilt of her sword. Or Fiora would raise that one eyebrow. Or Rebecca and Serra would glare. Or Kent would drag him by the ear--
He knew he should keep his distance, but, Florina was magnetic in her silence. His feet would move in her direction before he realized how close to death he was; death being the Lady Lyndis.
“Sain.”
“Ah Milady! How do you fare on th--”
“Sain.”
“Y-yes?”
“You’re scaring her.” His pride took a tiny hint, but as a proud knight, he just smiled. Florina had taken to the skies and he watched her fly away. Again.

“Suppose, for a second my boon companion, that you were trying to win the heart of the fairest woman in the camp.” Sain leaned on his knees, and ran a hand in his hair. Kent didn’t look up from cleaning his armor. Sain thought he saw him flinch a little, though.
“I’ve no time for your nonsense.”
“But, this is for love!”
“Sain, you fall in love every other day. Who is it this time?” Kent’s face was cross, but his words weren’t venomous. They were… like a mother’s slap on the hand. Meant to warn, not to hurt.
Of course, Sain was always the mischievous child.
“It’s… the Lady Lyndis.” Kent’s hand slipped off the edge of his breastplate and he staggered a bit.
“W-what?”
“Only kidding, my brother in arms! Tis sad though. Lovely Lyndis’s heart is already long held hostage.”
Kent paled. “W-w-what?”
“Ah, it seems she’s fallen for a silent knight.” Kent paled more.

Florina was combing Huey when he approached. She turned, eyes wide, and Sain stepped back.
“Ah, do not feel threatened, fair Florina! It is only I, Sain, you’re faithful knight! I just… wished to see…” he lost his thoughts mid sentence because she was smiling--smiling!--at him, “…if you needed any assistance with grooming your pegasus!”
At least he thought it was a smile; her lips weren’t quivering, or nose running, or her eyes reddening, so he took that as a victory. A small one.
“I-I’m f-f-fine, th-thanks.” Her lavender hair fell into her eyes, but Sain still saw the flush on her cheeks, and noticed how the space between them was getting smaller. He was almost close enough to touch her; the scent of hair hit his face and smiled.
“SAIN!”
“GAH!” Fiora stomped over and pressed herself between them.
“What is wrong with you? Leave her alone! Stop harassing her with your tripe.” Now Florina’s eyes were bordering on glassy, and Sain thought just maybe she was happy with him.
Maybe.
---
Captivating. That’s how he described her. She pulls on her each boot strap three times while shaking her foot. Florina talks to Huey, but only when she thinks she’s alone. She bites her finger nails, but only on the left hand, and twirls hair around her right fingers.
She’s the most adorable creature to grace Elibe, he’s sure.
Florina started to wave at him, but she stopped mid shake and scratched Huey’s ears.
Saing shouts a “Good morning, oh my beauteous Florina!” and dashes off before Fiora throws her lance.
Another victory, I’d say.
---
An arrow is aimed at her heart. Sain can see the enemy; he’s within range.
Florina--
It’s released. He swings too late but the archer still falls. And so is Florina. He thinks he can hear her, but he’s not sure. Sain’s horse is charging as fast as her legs will go and he’s already dismounted and at her side.
“S-s-sain?” He wipes the hair from her eyes. It’s not fatal; but she’s injured.
“Shh, you’ll be okay my flower! No harm will come to you in my arms.”
This time, she does smile.
---
“If you ever hurt her--”
“Or almost hurt her--”
“Or even think about hurting her--”
“Yes, yes ladies. You’ll slice me into tiny bits and feed them to your noble steeds! But, I assure you, darling Florina will be safe and cared for!” Fiora and Lyndis crossed their arms and stared him down. He withstood it, sort of, well, in between the flinching.
Until Florina touched his arm, and looped her little hands into his. She rested her head against his arm, and said, “St-stop being mean to him g-guys. I… love him.”
Sain pulled her into his arms and she didn’t hide or flee. Florina just smiled, that slight, hint of a smile that pulled him in.
