Chapter 1 - I Must Be Dreaming

A continuous beeping. That's all he could hear. He felt comfortable and relaxed, maybe in his bed, maybe with Leon sleeping next to him. Slowly he opened his eyes and winced a little at the morning light creeping through the blinds. Still hearing that now obnoxious beeping he looked to the side of him to find a heart monitor.

"Why the hell is there one of those in my room?" He asked no one, voice laced with sleep. He glanced around. "...Why am I in my room?" He gently pushed his weight onto his elbows and lifted himself into a sitting position only to find his head spinning and dropped his weight back into his pillow. Sighing, he looked to the side of him. "Where's Leon..."

Cloud decided he should figure out what he's doing home, hooked up to a heart monitor and IV and why Leon isn't here with him. Thinking back, Cloud remembered Leon insisting they go to the movies. They were in the car... There was pain. Leon was bleeding. Cloud's eyes widened. "The accident..." He sat up as much as he could and looked down at himself for any sign of injury. None. Sighing he laid back down.

Thoughts began going through his mind. 'Shouldn't I be in the hospital, not at home? Where's Leon? Is he ok? Shouldn't I be more hurt than this? I feel weak...I just want to see Leon again...' The sound of the door creaking open brought him back from his thoughts. He looks to the door and saw Laguna standing there staring at him. Cloud just blinked. 'Is he ok?'

Laguna just turned around and left the room leaving a confused Cloud. A minute or so, he returned to the room with Ray. They both walked over to the bed, Ray had her hand over her mouth and looked as though she was about to cry. Again, Cloud blinked. "Cloud?" Laguna spoke as if he was in one of those 'I can't believe it's not butter' commercials. Cloud arched an eyebrow. "Yeah?" Ray choked a little at hearing his voice and sat beside him on the bed, reaching out a shaking hand to touch Cloud's face. Cloud looked at her, full of concern. "What's wrong?" Laguna smiled a bit, "You're awake."

Cloud sat up a little again, wincing at the nausea. "Well...yeah?" Ray had attached herself to him gently as soon as he sat up. Laguna, smiling sadly, shook his head. "Cloud, you've..." He took a deep breath and exhaled. "Cloud...you've been in a coma fo--"Where's Leon?" Laguna sighed, then took another breath. "Cloud, you've been in a coma for about 5 years." Cloud could feel his heart start racing. He looked at Laguna, face turning pale. "Where's Leon?" Laguna looked to the floor. "He's fine." Cloud sighed in relief. "But Cloud...I should tell you.." Cloud looked to Laguna having a strong feeling he wont like what he hears. "What, is he forever paralyzed or something?" Laguna sighed. This wasn't easy. "No Cloud, his health is fine, the only thing he got in the accident was a scar on his face." Cloud looked to the window, trying to picture what Leon would look like with a scar. The image he got didn't look to attractive.

"Cloud, let me first say that it's been 5 years. Your doctor had told us that you'd never wake up. They wanted to pull the plug." Cloud downcast his eyes to the blanket hiding under his jagged bangs. "Your mother refused to let that happen to they sent you home. A nurse comes about every day to check up on you." Ray was now sitting on the edge of the bed looking at Cloud sadly as Laguna spoke, hands folded in her lap. "What does this have to do with Leon?" Laguna scratched his head a little, still looking at the floor. "I was- It has a lot to do with him, but what I'm trying to say is that we had all lost hope that you'd ever wake up. That's where he comes in..." Cloud looked puzzled the blankets. 'Him?' Laguna sighed. "Cloud, Leon...he.." He sighed again. "Cloud, Leon found somebody else..." Cloud looked up at Laguna, feeling as though he‘d been stabbed in the heart.

"Cloud, don't take it the wrong way, please understand. You were expected tonever wake up. And everyone was telling us, especially telling Leon, to move on. Plus it's your fault that Leon sought comfort in another relationship." Cloud looked back to the blankets, trying with all his might to fight back the tears. Ray glared at Laguna. He looked at her flustered then back to Cloud. "I-I'm sorry Cloud, I didn't mean to put it like that. Leon...he... Leon took the blame for what happened to you. He was in a highly depressed state for awhile. His new...um...lover helped him a lot. You should be grateful to him.." He took a deep breath. "Plus, shouldn't you be glad that he was able to move on from what was pretty much like your death?" Ray rubbed Cloud's back affectionately. "I'm sorry, Hun." Laguna watched Cloud tremble, feeling horrible at what he'd just said. "I-I'm going to go call his doctor. I don't even know if I was supposed to tell him all of that yet."

Cloud shook his head as his mother hugged him. "Did this really happen? Did he really leave me? He said he'd never leave me..." Cloud choked a little, not being able to hold it in anymore. This was too much. "Am I still asleep? Is this just a nightmare?" He leaned into his mother's touch. "Will I ever wake up?" Ray remained quiet. She had known this would happen, she knew Cloud would wake up. But no one would listen to her.

Laguna sighed as he picked up the phone. Yeah, he was very happy that Cloud was awake, but this is going to be very stressful for all of them. He stared at the phone debating whether to call Squall or not. Squall was- is Cloud's best friend and it would probably make Squall happy. But it would probably also stress him with 'Operation Irvine'.

Hoping it would make it better, he squeezed his eyes shut and held the phone away from him as he dialed then cautiously put the phone to his ear.

After about three rings he heard someone pick up. "Hello, hello! This is the Leonhart residence, how may I help you today!?" Instantly recognizing the cheery voice Laguna smiled. Finally, someone to brighten the mood. "Hello Sora. What are you doing at Squall's? He's not trying to study is he?" Sora eeped at hearing his dad's voice. "Well, he is but I'm not bothering him, I swear! Irvine is teaching me how to shoot well because I suck. But I'm getting better!" Laguna blinked. "He's teaching my innocent Sora how to shoot?" Sora giggled. "It's a video game, dad." Laguna sighed in relief. "I didn't know Squall had video games."

Sora giggled again. "He doesn't. They're Irvine's." Laguna decided he should stop avoiding why he actually called and just get on with it, sighing, he spoke with seriousness. "Sora, is Squall there?" "Uh, yep! One sec!" Laguna could hear an annoyed 'what?' and Sora in the background telling Leon his father was on the phone. After some rattling with the phone Leon answered. "What." Laguna smiled. Oh, how he loved his loving son. "Great greeting Squall. Always been your strong point." Leon growled at his father's sarcastic-ness. "If you called to be an idiot talk to Sora, I'm busy." Laguna sighed. "Are you too busy for Cloud?"

"What? Enough with that I told you, I can't come see him." Leon didn't feel like dealing with his father trying to get him to visit Cloud again. "What if he were awake?" Leon shook his head. "It doesn't matter, he's not going to wake up, I'm hanging up now." Leon began to take the phone away from his ear. "Wait Squall!" Leon paused. "Cloud is awake. He woke up this morning, I'm guessing." Leon just stayed frozen in disbelieve. "Would you like to talk to him?" On that note, Laguna heard the line go dead. He hung up, and dialed Cloud's doctor.

The next morning the sun was peaking through the blinds and spreading lines of light across Cloud's bed. Cloud shifted in his sleep, his IV was now off and heart monitor gone. Feeling like he was being watched, Cloud opened his eyes and looked to his right to see two grey-blue eyes staring at him. "L-Leon?" Leon just shifted his weight onto his other foot, not knowing what to say. Cloud started to peel away his blankets and swung his feet over the side of the bed to get up. Leon's eyes widened and he stepped forward and gently moved Cloud back into the bed into a sitting position against the headboard.

Cloud lifted a blond eyebrow. "I can get up..." Leon shook his head. Cloud looked into his eyes concerned. "Why aren't you speaking?" The stabled haired man looked to the floor. Cloud slumped against the back of his bed and looked down at the blankets. "Laguna told me...about how you thought it was your fault." Leon closed his eyes and sighed. Damn Laguna. "I don't blame you, you know. It's not your fault for what happened." Cloud looked to him. "Please just say something. I'm so confused, I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do with myself. Please just say something. Let me hear you speak Leon. I miss you." Leon raised his head and looked at Cloud. "I...I don't know what to say."

Cloud nodded his head a little. "Are you upset I woke up?" Now that got the brunette's attention. He looked a little hurt. He opened his mouth to say something but he paused. He didn't know how to respond to that. The answer was 'of course not' but... That will do I guess. "O-of course not Cloud, I love you. You're my best friend.." Cloud put his head down further, feeling pain in his heart. "So, I heard about your boyfriend. If he was able to replace your boyfriend who was in a coma he must be nice." Leon's eyes returned to the floor, Cloud sighed looking over to Leon. "I'm fine with it you know. It's alright, I understand I was never supposed to wake up, that it's been five years. I'm fine. I don't expect you to go running back into my arms." Leon shook his head. "He didn't replace you Cloud. I still l-"I don't care Leon, go be happy with this guy. I told you I'm fine. Just do one thing for me?"

Leon cocked his head a little. "Just hold me one last time... Can you?" Cloud put his head down, afraid of the response. After a moment, Leon walked over, lifted up Cloud's covers and climbed under with him and put his arms around the blonde's thin waist. Oh, how he missed this, one last time of snuggling with Cloud wouldn't hurt right? He nuzzled his face into Cloud's neck, breathing in his scent. They stayed like that, both of them just relaxing into each other's touch. After a few seconds of silence Leon spoke. "So...how's your...um...condition?" The corner of Cloud's mouth twitched a little and he ran his figure down Leon's scar as he spoke, thinking it suit Leon. "My doctor says I'm pretty healthy, just need to go to physical therapy for awhile and work on gaining weight back." Leon smiled a little. "Oh, well that's-" Leon was interrupted by his phone which had started ringing loudly.

Sighing, he unwound his arms from Cloud's waist and sat up. After a few seconds of shifting around in his pocket, he pulled out the phone and answered. "Mm." Cloud couldn't make out what the other person was saying, he could just tell it was a guy. After a few seconds of the man's incoherent voice, Cloud watched as Leon simply replied. "Whatever...I'll be home soon. ...Yeah...Mn...Yeah, he knows." At that. Cloud could hear the man's voice turn frantic. 'I guess it's Leon's boyfriend..' Leon chuckled a little. "Don't worry, he says he's fine with it." Cloud closed his eyes and balled his hands into fists. '..I'm not fine with it...' Leon shifted a bit and swung his legs over the side of the bed. "Mmhm...ok, I'll see you soon...I love you too...Mn." Cloud tried as hard as he could to ignore the fact that his boyfriend...(er, ex-boyfriend, Cloud didn't even know which) had just said 'I love you' to someone else. It hurt.

Cloud opened his eyes and looked up as Leon stood. "I have to go, Irvine and I are supposed to go get dinner soon." Cloud just nodded, guessing that this 'Irvine' was his replacement. Leon sighed. "I'm sorry Cloud, I wish none of this had happened." Cloud shook his head. "It's fine. We already went over this. Just go, you're going to be late." "I really am glad you're awake Cloud." Cloud sighed. "I know that Leon." 'I'll never truly wake up...' Leon looked both ways and leaned down and gave Cloud a kiss. "I don't regret us." Cloud sighed again and put his head down. "I know Leon, I never thought you did." Leon nodded. "Well, I'll come visit you again later." With that, Leon strode out of the room. Cloud just laid there, limp on his bed staring at nothing. He felt like something was grabbing his heart and squeezing it as tight as it could. 'I wish I never woke up...'

After hearing the car pull away from his house, Cloud sat up and looked out the window. Nobody else was home. Then it just hit him. Why stay here? Nobody needs him here, he's just a burden. Nobody truly wants him, so he should go. Start a new life. Find something to live for. Cloud got up and went over to his closet and got out a coat. After putting it on, he glanced around, eyes landing on his wallet, he picked it up and placed it in his pocket then left his room.

When he made it to the doorway, he stepped into his shoes, which he was surprised to find that they still fit him. He took one glance around and walked out the door.

After walking for most of the day, with quite a few breaks in between, Cloud had no idea where he was. He'd taken a train from his hometown, not paying attention to where he was going, now he was in this city, and had no clue what to do or where to go. It was getting dark and really cold. Nights in this area were not fun in the winter. Cloud pulled out his wallet and looked to see how much money he had left.'5...whoopee Cloud, what are you going to get with that!' He sighed. 'I should've waited until I had more money.'

After walking for a bit more, Cloud started to feel weak and the nausea he had been feeling was intensifying. He glanced around the strange town. The buildings were all close together, it smelled like a mixture of rotting food and dog crap, and Chinese. (which didn't help his nausea) There were no benches to rest on either.

Cloud started stumbling, he couldn't see straight and he started having intense pain in his head. Holding his head Cloud stumbled over into the snow. He liked it, it felt cool on his overheating body. Laying there, Cloud could have sworn he heard someone yell. He opened his eyes and it was all blurry but he saw feet in front of him. The person they belonged to kneeled down. "Hey, are you alright?" Cloud closed his eyes and everything went black.
