WIP pics - TSP May anthology, redone again

Feb 09, 2012 23:35

I decided to change my TSP May anthology drawing AGAIN. A new take on the old concept.. now with mermaids! hahaha

(I laugh but-- no really, I added mermaids XD)

These are just the rough drafts but what the hey, may as well post it. If anyone sees anything that seems egregious you should comment, though, so I can fix it before I color.

I'm hoping this time I'll actually stick with this idea. It should be fun enough to color that I think I might. (For those who forgot, my tags are "angels" and "military" and of course the theme is travel)

Overall preview (sorry for the wide pics):

I'll probably end up coloring it and having a heavy black border like this:

By the way, this picture is actually giganticore. Here is the 100% view of the angel and mermaid in the center:

I haven't decided yet on a finalized pose for the main angel's legs/feet. I'm sure I'll end up changing other things too.

In case you're curious about the back story:

In this world, angels are predators (like birds) who prey on the mermaids (like fish). The mermaids/men have a military force that goes near the surface for supplies and sometimes to cull the angel herd, but the angels have a siren song that lures mermaids up out of the water if they don't focus. There, they're snatched out of the water and brought to great heights where they're devoured. The angels can also change the appearance of their hands and other parts of them so they can lure in prey who think they aren't dangerous. But the mermaids are super fast and can live at depths few other creatures can, so many times they can dart away from danger.

The idea for this came suddenly after I ran across this picture at DA: Mermaid Rough by hito76. Also, I enjoy making angels be evil since everyone seems to think of them as benevolent creatures. I kind of want to write a story set in this world...

Oh, more previews -- This angel is a glutton who likes to eat the human part first and hovers uncharacteristically close to the water as she already searches for her next meal:

The mermaid's friend plans to save her:

(I know the friend especially needs work, but I haven't yet decided whether it's a mermaid or merman so I didn't bother finalizing her/him yet, including the hands etc)

I liked the previous idea I had of a wordless comic with an entirely different story line than this but it wasn't going to turn out as well as I wanted if I tried to do it now. I figured I'd rather draw something like this so I don't need to worry about super complicated backgrounds. At least with this I can have fun coloring it, which maybe will make it look okay enough whether or not the lineart is up to par.
