Just saw the (American version of) the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I haven't seen any of the Swedish versions or read the books, but I can say this much-- the movie is awesome. Lisbeth is awesome. I will probably buy it when it comes out.

I loved the American version! If it helps, my friend who's seen all the Swedish movies but hasn't read the books said that he actually almost likes the American one more, even though he didn't expect to at all. He said that comparatively, they do a better job explaining some things and laying out the investigation in the American one, and several scenes are more tense. It also explains Lisbeth's apparent change in attitude toward a character in subsequent films, which was a little confusing in the Swedish films but explains well in the American. And that it wasn't that he disliked Lisbeth but he didn't really connect with her/REALLY like her until the third Swedish film, but he liked her pretty much from the beginning in the American.
I need to watch the Swedish films and/or read the books because I know nothing about it and I'm trying to keep it that way so I'm not spoiled on anything. But I can say that in watching the American film, I really liked Lisbeth right away. She has a great attitude. Also, the film is unexpectedly funny. It's not that people are making jokes, but the delivery of different lines or the looks people give made everyone in the audience chuckle more than once, even in really serious scenes.
I really think the movie was done excellently on its own. I guess that's all I can say since I can't personally compare it to anything. But my friend said some things in the American one, he heard, are truer to the books. So you should check it out and see if you like it :D
