Brilliant Blue is pretty brilliant but damn I wish there were more in English from that mangaka
Damnit, lately I keep really liking mangaka whose works are almost entirely all unscanlated and unlicensed. I randomly ordered Brilliant Blue by YORITA Saemi the other day and the series (2 volumes) arrived recently. I just finished both volumes and I really, really liked it.
It's a very sweet/cute/funny BL story that for once doesn't include random rape or sexual assault, nor the infamous "I can't hold back any longer!" line (which I seriously want to find the Japanese for and put that on a frickin shirt or icon), nor is one side of the main couple pressured or forced into the relationship. It's pretty much a really cute/sweet, normal story of two people falling in love. Of course one character is a little slow on the uptake and the other is thought to be pretty hard ass by everyone else, but they're so frickin cute together.
Behind the cut is a scene that isn't a spoiler but shows a little bit of their interaction, with Nanami being way into food and Shouzo kind of holding off.
ALSO, this is a spoiler so don't read this if you don't want to be spoiled at all, but --
there is this incredibly adorable scene toward the end of the story where they're in love and Shouzo tells Nanami to come closer, who does, and then they're kind of joking back and forth with Shouzo saying things like 'What should I do?" about how cute Nanami is. Shouzo ends up sweeping Nanami up into his arms and says, "I know! I'll cut you into thirds and eat you all up!" and Nanami's laughing and says, "Eee! A serial killer! <3" AND OMFG IT IS SO GODDAMN CUTE.
Anyway, I went to manga updates to check on her other work because I so wanted to read it-- BUT NO. Not a SINGLE one of her works is scanlated! At all! Not even Brilliant Blue. I guess we're lucky that one got licensed but talk about suckage-- I have no idea if they'll license more of her stuff and so I can't read anything else even scanlated.
SIGH.
This is one more reason I should work on my Japanese skills again. Maybe I should ask if there are raws of any of her work and then I can try translating them myself...

In other news, I was happy with doing some Scrivener stuff for my fantasy series. And then that's been making me want to draw the characters. I suck at drawing but then I've been thinking lately, who cares? I can just put down the images in my mind and over time different sketches can at least remind me of a general idea of the character design.
