Summary: Buffy reflects on her new life in Rome.

Ever since she had arrived in Italy, Buffy had been able to live a life that could be termed as carefree. As the head Slayer and the head of the newly reconstructed Watchers’ Council, she had responsibilities and commitments, but she no longer had to juggle a normal existence during the day with her sacred duties a Slayer, which consumed most of the night. Gone were the dusk to dawn patrols followed by a nine to five job with sleep caught whenever she had a spare moment. In its place was an expensive and trendy apartment in Rome, a fat pay cheque and a minimum set of duties.

As she stared at the enormous diamond ring on her left hand, Buffy realized that she had allowed herself to become a figurehead when it came to the Council. She couldn’t really remember the last time that she had made a real decision instead of just deferring to Giles’ judgment. Instead of helping the Council, she lived a wild and carefree life where she was escorted to one trendy nightclub to the next on the arm of the suave and sophisticated Immortal. He had been up front with her when he had told her that he was only interested in her because of a petty and macho rivalry with Angelus and Spike. Yet she had still let herself be swept in his smooth courtship until the inevitable had occurred and he had slid the ring on her finger and she’d accepted his proposal.

She couldn’t help but question why she was doing any of this. In her heart, she knew that she wasn’t ready for this anymore than she had been ready for Angel on the eve of Sunnydale’s last day. Yet she had been rushed into falling head over heals for someone that she found to be pompous and annoying and who was just using her to score off of Angel and Spike, just like he had once used Drusilla and Darla over a hundred years ago. The blonde gave her head a shake as she twisted the elegant ring on her finger. She decided that she’d give it back that evening and she’d end the relationship. Afterwards she’d head to London where she’d immerse herself in the day-to-day business of the Council. And maybe she’d find someone who wouldn’t care that she was a Slayer or that she’d been involved with Angel and Spike. Someone who’d love her for who she was and not what she was or who’d she dated.
