Summary: Faith is introduced to Anita for the first time.

I could tell that Anita Blake hated me on sight and would try to literally backstab me the first chance that she had. Then again she always did have the hots for Edward, I had easily found that out before I’d ever met her. From her stance and the way she talked, it was obvious that she thought she was something else and that no one could resist her. And maybe if she left the monsters alone, she’d be in Edward’s bed. However, about the same time that she’d started to develop feelings for a master vampire and a werewolf, Edward had found me. Maybe he had even seen a bit of her in me, and that’s why he had taken me in. Trust me, it wasn’t easy winning his trust and it certainly wasn’t easy working for him. He was stricter than my Watcher had ever been and he had trained me hard.

You could say that Edward had turned me from a Slayer into a killing machine. And unlike the perfect Anita, I didn’t have any qualms about destroying the monsters, whether it was against the law or not. I didn’t hang onto flimsy excuses; instead I destroyed the monsters I encountered. And I certainly didn’t spread my legs for them, not like Anita. I don’t think she even realized how far she’d fallen in Edward’s eyes. The day that he had founded out that she had not only fallen in love with a monster but had let it into her bedroom had been the day he had stopped fighting me and fallen into my bed.

And now she was looking at me with hatred and jealousy burning in her eyes. I guess, she thought that she was the only woman in his life. Her sharp eyes didn’t miss a thing about how he treated me and made sure that I was prepared to go in battle. He didn’t act any differently, but a woman could tell when a man was attached to another woman. I wanted to laugh in her face and tell her that she’d destroyed any chance that she had had with him when she brought a vampire and a werewolf into her bed. I could smell her fury and the irony was that she had no one to blame but herself. Her own actions had made her disposable to Edward, and she didn’t even clue into the fact that he was only using her on a difficult job.

“You do anything to Faith, and you won’t live to see another day,” Edward stated, breaking the escalating tension between her and me.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Anita denied.
“Yes you do,” Edward said before he turned his back on her and lead the way into the demon’s liar.
Yet I wondered if she really did know, it seemed to me that Anita Blake was one of those women who unconsciously expected every man in her life to drawn to her like a moth to a flame. She probably couldn’t say why she hated me on sight, much less why she was so angry. No doubt, she’d be the type who’d be all emotive about it too. I could just see it now; she’d tell Edward that she had just had this gut feeling about how she didn’t trust me or some other bullshit like that. She’d deny her jealousy towards me because I had Edward and she didn’t, even to herself. Suddenly my ill will towards her vanished, and all I saw was a pathetic woman who couldn’t resist her desires standing in front of me. I even felt sorry for her until Edward turned back to face us and raised his eyebrow, silently questioning us. I grinned at him and realized that if she’d been stupid enough to throw him away for a vamp and a mutt, then I was glad for it.

”After you,” I told her as I motioned for her to follow him. I might feel sorry for her, but I wasn’t about to present her with my back.
“Fine,” Anita tightly replied and followed Edward in.
