Notes: Written for fanfic100 for prompt #98 (writer’s choice.) Set during BTVS Season Three.
The man who stood in front of her had short blond hair and cold blue eyes and he chuckled as she dropped the stake. He had materialized from the shadows like one of the vampires that she normally hunted, but she didn’t get any vibes off of him. If he was a monster, then he was just a human one and not a supernatural one. And the coldness of his eyes made her wish that she hadn’t dropped her stake, but she had been slaying vampires without a legal warrant for execution. Faith took a step backwards away from him as he took one forward. And for the first time in some time, the brunette felt fear as she wildly looked around for an escape.
“There’s no way out, little girl.”
”Who the fuck are you and what do you want?” Faith demanded as he took another step closer to her.
“I want the same thing that you do.”
”Yeah and what’s that?”
”I want to see all of the vampires destroyed.”
”They have legal rights now,” Faith carefully said, not sure if he was trying to trick her into saying something incriminating or not.
“Rights that allow them to take advantage of the innocent.”
”Yeah, so what?” Faith replied as she crossed her arm on her chest.
”Well I think that together, you and I would make a powerful team.”
”And why should I work with you?”
”You and I would be more powerful than you could ever be with any Watcher that the Council sends you, even if you pair up with the blonde princess.”
”And why do you think that?” Faith asked as she hid her nervousness over his knowledge of who and what she was.
“Because we both play by our own rules. So what do you say? Do you want to do what you were born to do without the fear of regulations and restrictions?”
Faith looked at the nameless man and she was tempted to take him up on his offer. She hated work under Buffy and Giles since they were so caught up in the idea of playing fair with the monsters. There were times when she felt like she was the only sane one. The only one who actually saw that the monsters were monsters and therefore needed to be exterminated in order to protect the innocents that they preyed on. Yet the man standing in front of her scared her on some instinctual level. She knew that if it came down to it, he would kill her if he had to and he’d do it without any regret. However, his offer was to tempting to pass up, even if she feared him.
”Okay,” Faith finally broke the silence. “What do I call you?”
”Edward will do.”
