She stared at Ecklie in disbelief as she tried to control her anger of his accusations. She couldn’t believe that he was accusing her of jeopardizing the investigation of Nick’s kidnapping because she had gotten the ransom money from her father. Ecklie didn’t seem to care that she had managed to get the money when no one else had and in the end it hadn’t really mattered. When the guilty person killed themselves after making a confession and the victim was recovered, and then it hardly mattered if the anonymous donation came from her father. But more than that, Catherine was angry that Ecklie had found out the details of the conversation between Grissom and herself since it had been a private conversation. Instead of saying anything that she would regret later on, Catherine smiled at him and promised to be a good girl in the future. It made her despise Conrad Ecklie even just a little bit more. He was a slimy and manipulative jerk who was more concerned about his political career than he was about the lab, but he was still her boss so she had to toe the line that he expected her to.

As soon as they made it back to his apartment, Nick had removed her green dress. The mounting desires they had experience over dinner and cocktails had threatened to consume the both of them as they had left the restaurant. Catherine had been on the verge of losing control ever since Nick had started to deliberately tease her at the restaurant with careful seductive whispers and touches. She gasped as he gently nipped at her neck and she decided that she would turn the tables around on him and bring him to the point of losing control. He chuckled at the wicked smile that curved her lips and Nick knew that he was in for another intense evening.

What they shared couldn’t be called love, instead it was a mutual need for physical contact and fulfillment of desire. His ordeal of being buried alive had affected the both of them deeply and it had been Catherine who had stayed with him once he had been released from the hospital. She had held him through his nightmares that night and when he had woken up the following morning she had touched him when he needed that too. Out of that a relationship had developed between the two of them. And although they had kept it quiet to avoid office gossip and speculation, there was genuine affection between Catherine and Nick. It might not be love but what they shared together was more than enough for the two of them.

He watched as she sipped the light green cocktail that she had ordered and he suddenly wished that he was ten years younger. Despite having had a rough night, Catherine still managed to look classy. No one would ever suspect that earlier that night she had been digging through a dumpster looking for a vital piece of evidence. Or that she had relentlessly questioned a suspect in order to break him and get the needed confession. Instead she sat there talking to him about the joys and pains of parenthood looking calm, cool and collected. It only made Brass admire her even more and once again he wished that he were in the same league as she was.
