au100 for prompt #16 (purple). Set during an au Year Seven, this is not Half Blood Prince compliant.
He had found her wandering the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest. She had been naked, bruised and confused and Snape had known immediately that she had been attacked by over zealous Death Eaters. He couldn’t be sure if he was dealing with students or not, so he had sneered at her and insulted her before wrapping her in his cloak. It had nearly broken his heart when she had looked at him with wide eyes and she had started to cry. Yet his double life as a spy for the Order and for the Dark Lord had to be preserved at all costs, even at the expense of a brutalized girl. However, that salient fact still didn’t prevent the purple bruises that covered her body from cut into his soul. It was another example of how he continually failed his charges. He couldn’t save any of them; all he could do was hopefully provide Dumbledore and the Order with enough information to bring about the Dark Lord’s downfall. In the meantime, he had to deal with the causalities with coldness, indifference and malice. He would never be able to get the sight of Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age, reduced to a broken and lost girl, barely able to remember her name because of some sadistic creature drunk on the Dark Lord’s power had decided to bring her down a notch or two. And there was nothing he could do.
