He stood at his desk with a dark sardonic look on his face as he watched his students quickly file out of the potions classroom. Hermione’s innocent reaction to his request had thrown him slightly because it had the potential to change how he went about things. He had quickly dismissed the idea of sexually seducing her because it had seemed unlikely that she would respond to him in any other way than fear. Furthermore, he knew that Dumbledore would eventually have to be told of the Dark Lord’s plans for Hermione Granger. Snape wanted to ensure that only he handled the delicate matter, and if there was even a slight hint of impropriety Dumbledore could ruin everything. So he quickly rejected the idea of seducing his student and instead he decided that he would use her devotion for Harry Potter against her.

As he smirked in her direction, Hermione stumbled as she approached his desk and he could practically read her frantic thoughts. Her fear was heavy and even he could feel it as she slowly closed the distance between them. He attempted to adopt a more relaxed position, the last thing he needed was her fear. However Snape knew that he had failed when she nervously stuttered and part of him regretted that he was putting his plan in motion and for the circumstances that made it necessary.

“Y-you wanted to see me, Sir?”
”That is correct, Miss Granger. I find that I have need for an assistant.”
”An assistant?” Hermione asked, clearly confused as to why he was even talking to her.
“Yes. Traditionally Hogwarts’ professors have selected their top seventh year pupil to assist them in a variety of tasks. Surely you are aware of this,” Snape replied with a slight sneer.

Hermione looked at her professor with a stunned expression on her face as she processed what he had just said. She had seen some of the other professors take on assistants, but in the seven years that she had attended Hogwarts she had never seen Professor Snape take on an assistant, nor had she heard of him doing so. And she couldn’t understand why he would offer the position to a student who was not in Slytherin and not a pure blood.

“Why?” Hermione asked the first thing that came to her mind.
“I would have assumed that was evident, Miss Granger,” Snape patiently explained, “May I have your answer sometime before the next class is to begin?”
”Yes, Sir, I would like to do that,” Hermione hesitantly replied, still unsure of his reasoning to choose her.
“Good, I will send you all the particulars by owl. Now shouldn’t you hurry to your next class, unless Gryffindor can stand to lose more points?”
”Of course, Sir.”

Snape didn’t reply as he watched her quickly leave the classroom. He was tempted to laugh at her obvious confusion and her innocence, and perhaps he would have if he hadn’t just started the grim task of turning Hermione Granger into a Death Eater. The thought of what he was doing caused his mood to sour as he started to usher in the First Years waiting in the corridor outside of his classroom.
