The cold and hard frost coated the ground and it seemed appropriate to Hermione Granger as she watched the coffin being lowered into the ground. It somehow seemed right that it was a bitter and grey winter day as she laid Severus Snape to rest. So much of his life had been spent with him living a life that was coloured grey more than any other colour. He had not had much happiness in his life and he had never expected to have much happiness. Even during the last few years of his life, when they had married.

Theirs wasn’t some great love affair; instead it had been a quiet relationship built on trust and mutual affection for one another. Severus had never been able to open his heart wide enough to let anyone in, and Hermione had never gotten over the cruel blow of losing Ron minutes before the Dark Lord had been destroyed to ever fall in love again. Together they had found something that the other was missing and it had been enough for the two of them.

And as she watched his coffin sinking lower and lower into the frozen ground, Hermione knew that she would miss the dour man who had meant so much to her. He had never understood that she had saved his life because she couldn’t bear to see another wizard die because of the Dark Lord. Yet once he had come to accept her trust and generosity, Severus had done everything within his power to make her life a happy one. When he had realized that she had wanted children, he had offered her a marriage so that she could have those children. And he had given her so much more. She felt a tear run down her face as her two children clutched her hands tighter. It seemed so unfair that he had died when he had finally started having some happiness in his life.
