I have always loved thinking about what might have happened during the summer break between Season Five and Season Six of BTVS. I mean when Season Six opens, Sunnydale is on the verge of being run over by demons and Willow and her friends are willing to bring back Buffy on some flimsy excuse. So this is where this little drabble is coming from....
Title: Failed Sacrifice
Author: Sweetness
Pairing: none
Rating: FR13
Disclaimer: The Buffyverse belongs to Joss Whedon and company.
Notes: Set post-Gift. Dawn reflects on Buffy’s gift.
She knew that Buffy had jumped to save her, but it had only made her feel hollow on the inside. The world needed heroes like Buffy; it didn’t need just another average teenage girl. It certainly didn’t need one that was also a Key to a hell dimension. Dawn needed Buffy and despite the sacrifice that her sister had made for her, Dawn couldn’t help but feel that cold and empty on the inside. She had no family with both Buffy and her mother being dead and lost to her. No one had a clue as to where Hank Summers was and Dawn really didn’t want to know. She might have memories of him being her father, but in reality he was a stranger who couldn’t be bothered to come to the funerals of his ex-wife and his daughter. Instead of a loving family, all Dawn had was a group of broken and grieving friends of her sister’s and a robot in the image of her sister that had started out a sex toy. Dawn didn’t think that Buffy’s sacrifice was really worth what she had lost and had gained. In the end, if she could relive that night over again, she would have jumped so that her blood could close the portal that it had opened.
