Angel had known what would happen but the rush of power that hit him caught him unawares and his demon gained control temporarily. By the time, he had managed to gain control; enough time had elapsed for his demon to cause more than enough damage. The vampire sank to the ground with his head cradled in his hands so that he wouldn’t have to look at the broken body lying on the floor in front of him. He was supposed to have been prepared to trick her so that she would think that he had lost his soul so that he could gain some useful information about the Mayor and his plans. He wasn’t supposed to have lost control during a magical lightshow and he definitely wasn’t supposed to have drained her life away. The shaman started to laugh, which caused Nagel to quickly turn to face him.

”What did you do to me?” Angel angrily asked.
“Nothing at all, Angelus.”
”I thought that you owed Giles a favour.”
”I did but I owed you much more than I owed him.”
”What did I do that would require the death of a Slayer?”
”In Europe, you murdered members of my family. And she was evil, so in many ways I did you a favour.”
”Get out of my sight,” Angel tiredly said.
”As you wish.”

As he looked at Faith’s lifeless body, Angel felt something inside of him break. He didn’t believe that she was truly evil, just severely misguided and he hadn’t given up hope that he could still help her find her way back. And now he realized that once again, he had failed someone that he cared about, because of his past and his current obsession with Buffy. If he had been able to focus a little less on Buffy, he might have been able to save Faith. But as he took in the damage that he had done while he had stolen her blood and her life, Angel knew that his past would always continue to haunt him. It made everyone near him a potential victim for revenge. Even Buffy had become a victim of Darla’s jealousy, and he knew that it would never end. He realized that he would never be able to save anyone because he couldn’t even save himself.

He felt obscene as he searched her body for her stake, but he knew what had to be done before he failed someone else. As his hand closed on the stake, Angel whispered an apology to Faith, it wasn’t enough and it would never be enough but it would have to do. His past and his nature would always haunt him, because he couldn’t deny either. He plunged the stake into his heart and his last thought was of the broken girl that he had destroyed.
