Tutorial: Golden Girl (Charlize Theron)

May 06, 2007 18:03

I had myself a free Sunday evening, so I decided to write a tutorial. :) This one teaches you how to get a nice golden glow for all your 'people' icons, and sharpens them up, too. :)

So you go from

THIS:

TO:

It's a Photoshop CS2 tutorial, but I'm sure it can be translated into other programs easily. And it's really simple, so even if you're a beginner, it shouldn't be a problem at all. :) And it is accompanied by images at every step.

STEP 1:

We start off with the original cropped image of the lovely Miss Theron:

STEP 2:

Create a New Layer (Layer >> New >> Layer). Then using the fill bucket tool, fill it up with colour #F65024

Set the blending mode to Overlay and the opacity to 40%

Your image should now look like this:

STEP 3:

Select all the layers so far (Select >> All) and copy merge them (Edit >> Copy Merged). Now paste it as a new layer (Edit >> Paste). Duplicate this (Layer >> Duplicate Layer) and set the blending mode to Screen at 100% opacity.

Your image so far:

STEP 4:

Now select all and copy merge all your layers so far (like you did in Step 3) and paste it as a new layer again. Select the Sharpen tool. Using it at 50% strength, run it over the pupils of her eyes, the pout of her lips, the highlights in her hair and wherever else you think a kind of 'glow' would look good. Just take care not to overdo it, because then it will look too artificial.

I used it minimally:

STEP 5:

This is the final step (yay!). We are going to use Unsharp Mask (Filter >> Sharpen >> Unsharp Mask) with the following settings:

Amount: 45 %
Radius: 5.7 pixels
Threshold: 0 levels

And you're done!

The levels & settings may vary slightly with the picture you choose, so play around with them!

I used the same technique on another icon, as well...this time of Jennifer Aniston.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Feedback & credit is always appreciated. And if you make something using this tutorial, I'd love to see! ♥
