personal clichés

In selecting work for my portfolio, I had to read a lot of my own writing. There's an awkward, self-conscious, masturbatory pleasure in doing this, so I tried to read it in a critical way, as if someone else had written it. This led to me noticing a lot of repetition.

Barely related: Once I saw a job advertised on the BBC website to be a writer for River City.

I thought about it, then realised every single idea I had ended with neds being attacked by Optimus Prime.

I think River City could use more neds being attacked by Optimus Prime, personally.

You're kidding!

I sometimes wish I'd applied for it, even just to mess about at the interview and suggest the strangest things, like renaming every male character 'Jim' in order to have a more realistic portrayal of Glasgow.

Are you kidding? You need years of film-making experience just to get an interview! I estimate a few hundred people will have applied for that job.

Technically I do have a few years of film/tv making experience...

...not at a professional level wherein I get all the Benjamins yo, but I did spend 4/5 years filming stuff inside and outside the studio instead of doing my degree.

Then you should have gone for it! Trainee BBC jobs are pure gold.

...this doesn't solve the Transformers problem though.

Now that I think of it, I'll answer the question of writing cliches.

My problem is that I'll try to write about things that I feel like I should have written about (exes) but never quite found a way that I was happy with, only to realise that I no longer have any strong feelings on the subject.

I did enjoy writing the skateboarding thing though, but that was a while back.

Never write things you think you should write! Only things that are fun.
