[Voluntary Commitments]
“Princess, stop! Wait, you’re going to ruin yo-” It was too late, a small girl of only three giggled and splashed in the mud, officially ruining the beautiful summer dress for the occasion. The girl’s mother, right beside the person who had shouted, only laughed and brushed a few stray hairs out of her eyes, eyes that were smiling almost as much as her. “Is this really all right, Aria?” The man moved closer to the mother of the girl, dodging a clump of mud and soft dirt. “She’s … certainly turning into quite the terror.”
“It’s just a stage,” the woman said, placing a hand on her companion’s shoulder. “Please take care of her well, Gamma, I’m counting on you.”
“And?” Gamma looked beseechingly at his boss, placing his hand over hers and holding her gaze. “How are you handling the loss of Luca? You’re not thinking of doing anything rash, are you?” When she looked away, a pained expression creasing her brow, he knew enough. “I’m sorry. I was there that day, it should have been me.”
Aria turned back to him, furious, and it showed. “It shouldn’t have been anyone. Why would you even say that? Do you really think Luca cared so little about the rest of you? He was a good man, but I know what he did was a good cause. If not … you … none of you … would have made it back from the Gesso alive. I miss him greatly, but I will not wallow. For my daughter,” she glanced at the little girl and smiled softly. “For my Family.” Her gaze locked challenging with Gamma’s now as she said, “I will stay strong and I will make sure we do not lose what we must protect from here on out.”
It wasn’t like his boss to lecture and he listened attentively, but he couldn’t refrain from commenting. “And what must we protect?” He had his own ideas of what he wanted to protect, but he was also living for his boss, for her and no one else, and he wanted to know what she wanted. Then he could turn her wishes into a reality as he had been trained to do throughout the long, hard years of working his way to the top.
She squeezed his shoulder and smiled again. “I think you know by now what’s important.”
They fell silent as the young girl laughed loudly and then watched as she fell back into the mud. Seconds later and they were pulling away from each other, Aria to join in with her daughter’s fun and Gamma to attend to other matters, his babysitting duty done for the day. He had much to think about now and his boss hadn’t been clear on where to begin.
But he knew there would come a day when he would look back on this summer lost in Italy and wonder what he could have done differently. There was one thing he would never change, though, and that would be his decision to protect their princess with everything he had, because she would need it the most and he would let nothing happen to her while he still had breath in his body. Such a small treasure that little girl was, and in one day she had wormed her way into his heart.
