When a pupil meets his teacher on the road, he should hasten towards him and bow. If the teacher addresses him, he should give a fitting reply; if the teacher is silent, he should retire quickly.... A pupil should wait upon his teacher and serve his without regard to mere conventions. As long as his teacher lives he must serve him zealously, and should pay him the tribute of sincere mourning for three years after his death.... If a prince is anxious to civilise his people or make them courteous and well-bred, it is with the school that he must begin. Uncut jade cannot be turned into a serviceable vessel; if men are uneducated they do not know how to conduct themselves. Thus it was that the wise kings of old, when settling their states on sound foundations and in ruling their people, made education their primary care.... There are two men in his realm whom the ruler cannot regard as his subjects. One is the man who in the ritual sacrifices to the dead personates the royal ancestors; the other is his teacher.

礼记 / Ritualų užrašai / The Classic of Rites, iš Reginald F. Johnston "Twilight in the Forbidden City"

Ta proga prisiminiau Mengzi:

Establish hsiang, hsü, hsio, and hsiâo,-- all those educational institutions,-- for the instruction of the people. The name hsiang indicates nourishing as its object; hsiâo, indicates teaching; and hsü indicates archery. By the Hsiâ dynasty the name hsiâo was used; by the Yin, that of hsü; and by the Châu, that of hsiang. As to the hsio, they belonged to the three dynasties, and by that name. The object of them all is to illustrate the human relations. When those are thus illustrated by superiors, kindly feeling will prevail among the inferior people below.
