In my last entry I mentioned that I was enduring a bout of tonsillitis, well after i had recovered and returned to work last Tuesday night, it turned into a little more drama. I had been fine till I got to work, but then my throat began to play up again. My immediate colleague began to feel seriously unwell too. My perception at that point was that maybe there was a problem with the air conditioning. Anyways, come 6 am, after bring there for 8 hours I was croaking away like buggery again and my throat was once more very sore. Alarmingly, my colleague was by that point almost on the verge of collapse, so much so that we called a taxi and sent him home.
So they guys from admin/personnel arrive at work and proceed to tell me how there had been a funny smell around the back area the previous day and someone had been sent to hospital feeling unwell, yet the store manager apparently could not smell anything or thought that people were somehow pulling a fast one. Once my store manager arrived I sat down with him and explained the situation to him, that we had a number of folks on the night shift who were unwell since arriving at work, including myself and we had to send one home already. Anyway, that long and the short of it is that after an investigation, it was discovered that there was a fairly serious carbon monoxide leak coming from our problem-ridden boiler system. It is cleared up now, but it is a pretty serious thing to have happen, particularly as there is no natural ventilation in that part of the building at all and we rely on air-conditioning to keep the air fresh. I seriously thought about contacting the union.....maybe I should, but as part of the management team that would not look good.
So to the weekend.....Neil and I went to church as usual on Sunday, and as we were sitting there listening to the opening notices we spotted a late arrival making his way to the front. Charles Kennedy (the leader of the Liberal Democrats here in the UK), with his wife, Sarah and their new baby son. It turns out that his wife's parents (who I know only to nod to), who are regular members of St B's were celebrating their 40th anniversary, so the whole family was in attendance that morning to wish them well. It was amusing during the "exchange of peace" in Communion to see folk make a bee-line especially to Kennedy (I must confess here that I too shook his hand....well I am a long time Lib-Dem supporter and voter).
