Title: Sanctuary pt 2
Summary: The war is over and everyone is going their own way but not everyone is willing to try it alone.
Author: Starlight Soul (AKA: AzureInk_Parchment)
Author Notes: Sanctuary is Unbeta'd as of yet. It is AU set just after the war and EW never happened... It's a get together fic.  For now the pairing is 1x2x1 but there will be more later (probably nothing more than hints until I'm ready to post Falling).
Disclaimer- I do not own Gundam Wing nor do I claim to.

Sanctuary pt 2

Heero surveyed the damage they would have to deal with before being able to use the third floor. The hole was large enough to fit a piano, though it was between the floor joists and still structurally sound. The crew hired to fix the hardwood floor was scheduled to arrive at any moment and Duo was bothering the crew working on the electrical two floors down. The drywall crew would not be able to start until the electrician finished in an area.

“Hey, ‘Ro, you up here?” called Duo as he led two man crew to the third floor.

“I’m here, I was just looking around. The Plumber finished about an hour ago, so everything is working now, though we don’t have much for power up here until the electrician gets this far.”

“That’s fine, that crew is working in the kitchen. They’re starting from scratch, just like I thought they would, but this way we don’t have to worry about frying anything. Abby’s gonna be here for a lunch order in about an hour. She gave me a couple of menus so that the crews could write down their orders,” said Duo.

“Will you make sure I get a chai tea and a sandwich of some kind?” asked Heero tiredly. “I’m going to head down to check on the changes being made in the basement. The central air guy finished nearly an hour ago, since the furnace was updated not that long ago the duct work was in good working order.”

“At least something was in working order. I’m tired of Preventor housing,” sighed Duo watching the men start working on the floor.

Heero gave Duo a funny look before leading the way back downstairs. “Me too, but it’s only for a day or two more. We should be ready to paint on Saturday.”

Duo ran his hand through his bangs, his exhaustion peeking from behind his mask. “We start at Preventors Monday, we’re pushing it a kinda close.”

“We could have the electrician call in the other team so that they can push through faster,” suggested Heero.

“That’s probably a good idea, the sooner we finish the better. We’ll survive at our current speed, but Sunday night I’m gonna sleep like the dead. Did it help, sleeping in shifts like that? I know it helped me a bit.”

Heero dropped his eyes, hiding the frustration shining in them. “It helped some, but it’s a lot more than the people. I wake up disoriented, half expecting that it’s the training center and J is coming for me.”

They continued to the basement where a crew was installing drywall. The flooring and mats were already in place. “You’ve never really explained what that means and I’m not exactly sure I wanna know. G was nothing like J, most of my training was the stuff I missed without schooling.”

Heero turned wide eyes on Duo before his icy mask could drop into place. “I don’t want to talk about training.”

“No problem,” replied Duo immediately, shock at the return of Heero’s stone mask evident on his face. “If you ever decide you want to talk about it let me know.” He watched Heero hide behind his bangs again and fought the urge to reach out to his companion. Heero’s cell phone disturbed the moment and he turned his attention to Heero’s side of the conversation.

“Yuy here,” snapped Heero tiredly. “Relena, what’s… hold on, say that again? What do you mean he can’t stay there?” Heero turned confused eyes towards Duo; Relena’s voice was loud enough to be heard with ease. “Tell him I’m on my way; we’ll figure something out. Goodbye Relena.”

“What’s wrong with the Pink Princess now?” asked Duo with a groan.

“Remember why we got a place this big,” asked Heero running his hands through his hair as though ready to pull it out.

“Yeah, so we’d have room for the guys if they needed it,” replied Duo. “What’s going on?”

“How do you feel about Zechs?”

“He kinda falls into the Gundam Pilot bracket and he saved our asses in the end. The real question is how do you feel about him? You fought him one on one. What’s going on?”

“I’m fine with it. He was a good pilot. Relena is having problem with him, she’s basically kicked him out. He’s refusing to turn pacifist and reclaim the family throne,” explained Heero.

Duo rubbed at his temples, lack of sleep wearing on him. “Go get him, we’ll make it work. Didn’t he join Preventors too?”

“Yeah, He did. Order something for him too,” said Heero pulling his keys out of his pocket and heading back upstairs.

Heero hurried towards Relena’s embassy house, glad for once that she was still in the same town. As he entered Embassy lane, His thoughts turned towards Zechs and the switches he made through the end of the war. Like many soldiers he had switched sides, always searching for a reason to fight, something or someone worthy of protection. He also shared a unique connection with the other pilots, though no one was eager to remember the Zero system.

Heero was so lost in thought he nearly missed Relena’s drive in the row of nearly identical drives. It was only the sight of Zechs leaning against the gates, long hair blowing in the breeze, with a duffle bag at his feet that stopped him. He pulled up and pushed the door open.

“If we hurry, she’ll never realize that you were here. She’s still running around preparing for your arrival,” said Zechs with a smirk.

Heero smirked back as Zechs tossed his duffle in the back and got comfortable in the passenger seat. “By the time she finishes we’ll be home. So, what did you do to get her to lose her temper?”

“Looking for tips?” asked Zechs arching one eyebrow.

“Maybe,” replied Heero.

“She didn’t want me to join Preventors, something about a job unbefitting my station. I have no desire to be a caged prince. So, where are we going?”

“Duo and I just bought a house. We planned on offering it as sanctuary for the other pilots if they need it. After Relena’s call Duo and I talked it over and felt you fit the category of Gundam Pilot.”

“How big exactly is this house?” asked Zechs.

“Five bedroom, all still under construction. We should be ready to paint by Saturday depending on how fast they can rewire it,” replied Heero. “We have three crews working today as it is and Duo is going to have the electrician call in reinforcements. They’ll be finished with the third floor today though.”

“No servants?” questioned Zechs hopefully.

“No servants, just us so we all have to pitch in.”

“Where are the two of you staying if it’s under construction?”

Heero sighed and turned down Azure Street. “We’ve been staying in Preventors Housing.”

Zechs stopped to actually look at the man driving. The exhaustion was well hidden but he had studied Heero long and hard. He could see the beginnings of it setting in. “It’s not going well I take it. Is Duo having as much trouble sleeping there as you are?”

“Yes,” Heero answered. “We’re pushing to get the house finished.”

Zechs glanced at Heero’s twitchy hands. “How long has it been since you’ve had a good night sleep?”

“How long since the war ended?” questioned Heero tiredly.

“Almost two weeks.”

Heero tried to suppress a yawn. “Almost five weeks.”

“Will there be anything finished tonight?” asked Zechs.

Heero rubbed a hand over his eyes before turning back to driving. “Just the basement workout room, the first floor needs drywall and then paint but it has to wait for the electrician to finish. We’re hoping that by calling in his other team we’ll get it all done a lot sooner.”

Heero turned into the driveway to find three more trucks than before. Abby’s scooter was parked near the porch. While Heero focused on parking, Zechs took in the scene before him. The house was huge; an old Queen Anne Victorian painted a warm chocolate with dark blue trim, a wrap around porch, and large yard. It was not the mansions of his youth but without a doubt held a sense of peace despite the work crews. He followed Heero from the car to the entrance where they found Duo and Abby chatting.

“I see the second team arrived. Hello Abby,” said Heero.

“Zechs, welcome to the house. This is Abby; she owns the café down the street. We’re just putting in lunch orders. I did remember yours, Heero,” replied Duo in one breath. “As for the other crew, Jay called in both of his other teams. They’re running all three floors at once. I called Dave so his crew will be here first thing in the morning to get started on the drywall. He’s bringing two more crews as well. He estimates that they’ll be finished with the drywall by Thursday afternoon. Oh, Zechs, I wasn’t sure what you would want to eat so I ordered you a roast beef on wheat with lettuce and tomato.”

“Now’s the time to change it, Sugar,” said Abby giving him a grin.

“That is wonderful,” responded Zechs. “You wouldn’t happen to have coffee too would you?”

“Sure do. Is there anything in particular or just plain?” She asked whipping out her list.

“Double mocha espresso with a shot of caramel, please, with no whip cream.” He gave her a smile.

“Dear lord, Duo, I may just have a heart attack if all of your friends look like this,” she said giving Heero a wink. “I’ll be about forty-five minutes with this size order.” She fled as Duo and Zechs both began laughing.

“Should I warn her that she’s the wrong gender for me?” questioned Zechs between gasps for air.

“She’ll just tease you more,” replied Duo as he tried to pull himself together, “but you might as well. Are you ready for the grand tour?”

“Definitely,” responded Zechs before turning to Heero, “You said the workout room will be finished today? Why don’t we start there?”

Heero led them across the living room to a door nestled under the stairs. They went down to find a crew working on installing a wood floor and mats. The walls were already finished with a shojo screen paneling; one length completely covered in mirrors. Zechs checked each door revealing the furnace room on one side and a bathroom on the other.

“Why not get some sleeping bags and stay down here?” questioned Zechs, “Obviously this is going to be finished by tonight and the two of you look ready to drop. Why haven’t either of you had a full nights sleep since Libra picked us up?”

Duo dropped boneless on the bench. “The housing triggers memories that neither of us are really interested in dealing with right now.”

Zechs glanced between the two younger men, their exhaustion hanging like a cloud between them. “It’s settled, we’re staying here tonight. I’m on watch; the two of you will sleep.”
