Title: Sanctuary pt 1
Summary: The war is over and everyone is going their own way but not everyone is willing to try it alone.
Author: Starlight Soul (AKA: AzureInk_Parchment)
Author Notes: Sanctuary is Unbeta'd as of yet. It is AU set just after the war and EW never happened... It's a get together fic.  For now the pairing is 1x2x1 but there will be more later (probably nothing more than hints until I'm ready to post Falling).

Sanctuary pt1

Duo Shifted uncomfortably in his bed causing Heero to glance at the clock again. 3:41 am, only five minutes after he last checked. He glanced around their small room wishing for something other than the drab gunmetal and grey of the prefab building. Duo rolled on his stomach and the rasp of rough military grade wool and cotton grated on Heero’s fraying nerves.

“Duo,” said Heero softly, ever aware of the paper thin walls. Some one nearby snored loudly.

“I didn’t mean to keep you awake, Heero,” Duo sighed in response.

“I can’t sleep either.” Heero added hesitantly, “It’s too much like the training center.”

“Like the Orphanage,” murmured Duo while returning to his back. “Hey, let’s go for a walk. While we’re out we can figure things out. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend another night here.”

“I don’t want to live alone,” Heero whispered to the darkness.

“Me either,” Duo replied, “How about we share. We’re both set financially, and working for Preventors means we don’t have to tap into that unless we want to. We could get an apartment.”

“What about a house? I trust you, but I don’t like having so many strangers so close,” said Heero. He sat up and started pulling on shoes and a shirt.

Duo mimicked him, pulling on shirt and shoes. “You mean it, about getting a house, ‘cause I know just the place.”

“Can we walk there?” asked Heero grabbing his bag. He quickly made sure everything was inside.

“Yeah, it’s only two and a half miles. The house is pretty cheap because it needs a lot of work,” answered Duo. He too checked his bag before shouldering it and leading the way out.

“You’ve looked into it,” prompted Heero as he dropped their keys at the desk of a sleepy-eyed soldier.

Heero listened quietly as Duo chattered on about the house, content to walk and listen to his companion talk. They left behind the hastily constructed Preventors housing and slowly made their way through the quiet streets. They had been walking only ten minutes when they stumbled upon the small party. Duo froze in his tracks, body tensed and ready for an attack. The whole time he fought all of the instinct honed by war. Heero felt himself tense, acknowledged the possible danger, and forced himself to let it go; though his hand twitched towards the gun he still carried.

Duo laughed a little uneasy and suppressed a shudder as the group stumbled by. “It’s strange to be able to walk around without worrying who is watching, who might recognize us.”

“I know,” Heero sighed. “We should be getting close.”

“The next block up, it’s the one with the privacy fence and the tall trees. It sits on two square acres. I was thinking it would be plenty of room for a dog.”

“It’s a very large house,” Heero commented. He glanced over the fence at a large Queen Anne styled house. It was hard to tell in the dark with only a sodium vapor light but the house appeared to be a dark brown or black.

Duo leaned against the fence giving him a clear view of Heero’s face. “It has five bedrooms or at least it will once the hole in the third floor is fixed.”

“Are we going to need so much room?” questioned Heero. He glanced down the length of fence which extended the whole block.

Duo let his eyes drop to the concrete and jammed his hands in his pockets making him look younger than he was. “I think so. It’s just a hunch, but I think we might.”

“You think they’ll seek solitude here?” asked Heero softly. He turned his gaze away from Duo’s strange defensive behavior and back to the trees and house hidden behind the fence.

“I hope they can find happiness,” Duo replied and scuffed his foot. “We shared so much, things that would break a lot of people, that we will understand each other. I want them to have a place where they don’t have to be…” He hesitated, suddenly at a loss for words.

“Let’s do it then,” Heero said startling himself.

“You really mean it? You wanna get the house, maybe a dog!” exclaimed Duo in surprise.

“I think it’s a good start to a plan. There’s an internet café up the block; let’s get breakfast. We can come up with a plan and contact the agent when the office opens.” Heero watched amused as Duo’s eyes lit up in delight.

Duo pushed off the fence and fell in step with Heero. “Ms Moore was very nice when I viewed the house yesterday.”

“Did she say what happened to the third floor?” inquired Heero. When Duo threw his arm over his shoulders, he found himself hyper aware of the long haired pilot.

“Nah, but I didn’t ask either. I did look at the problem, and it will be an easy fix,” added Duo thoughtfully.

Heero let the way into the café. Though it was small it was well set up with a friendly air. There was a counter with eight tall stools across the back, booths lined the right and front walls, and small tables filled the center of the room. The left wall was filled by a bookcase and books and two tables were tucked behind a small living room set.

The two men were surprised to be greeted by a pixie-like girl with Cerulean tipped hair. “Welcome to Sanctuary, What can I get you?” she asked with a smile.

“Are you serving breakfast?” asked Duo.

“We sure are, Sugar. The house specialty is eggs benedict.” She led them to a table that gave them a clear view of both doors. “You guys are new here. Are you part of the new Preventors?”

“Sure are,” answered Duo with a grin.

“That’s great! I’m Abby and Cherokee is the night chef. This is our Café.”

“Can I get a chai tea and a bagel with cream cheese?” asked Heero shyly.

“Sure thing, flyboy,” she said giving him a grin and wink.

Duo laughed outright at the crimson blush that crept up Heero’s neck. “How’d you guess?”

“The calluses on you thumbs,” she explained, “MS controls rub specific parts of your hands. Now, how about you Sugar?”

“Hot chocolate with a double shot of espresso, please. The eggs benedict sounds good too.”

“Great, I’ll give Cherokee your order and get your drinks. The internet password is Jasmine tea. Just let me know if you need anything,” said Abby before disappearing into the kitchen.

“Well, I think I’ve found my home away from home,” commented Duo. He slid down in his chair and stretched his long legs out before him, while watching Heero boot up his laptop.
