Time for a rant...

Nothing personal this time, I swear! Sifting through my e-mail inbox, I was reading 'taglines' for articles at New York Times. I came across the following tagline: A federal judge ruled that the courts do not have the authority or the expertise to decide injury lawsuits concerning global warming.

Before I get into this subject, a slight disclaimer: No, I did not read the article, and I don't plan to do so. But the idea this short statement expresses just pissed me off. Apparently, it was something about a lawsuit (or lawsuits) brought against automakers, trying to sue them for 'damages' due to global warming. WTF?!?!?!?! Yes, automobiles have contributed to global warming. So have any number of other things. For anyone to try suing automakers for "causing" global warming... it's just idiotic.

Can anyone say, with any certainty, that automakers knew cars would lead to such a potentially catastrophic occurrence? Hell, when cars were first invented, global warming hadn't even been thought of! If I'm wrong on that point, please let me know; however, considering there are still apparently people out there who don't 'believe' in global warming, I don't think it's been around quite that long. Of course, the theory of evolution have been around for quite some time, and there are still people who refuse to believe that could be possible, either. *rolls eyes*

I see a lawsuit like that as just more proof that society is going downhill quickly. People need to stop passing the buck and blaming everyone else for what's happening to OUR HOME. We are all, in some way, responsible for the damage that has been caused, and is still being caused, by our extravagances. People who smoke should not be able to blame the tobacco industry for getting cancer; people who develop addictions to drugs (legal or otherwise) should not blame whoever introduced them to the substance; people who depend on cars and other environmentally-unfriendly technology need to accept their portion of the blame.

On the other hand, it is promising that the judge refused to entertain the idea. At least they're not wasting money playing the blame game. This whole thing is just ridiculous posturing, and immaturity at its worst. Grow up, people, accept responsibility for your actions, and quit trying to blame the 'other guy'. We are all responsible, and we need to accept that and work towards a solution, instead of wasting time, money, and energy trying to figure out who should pay for it.

*climbs down off her soapbox* Any questions, comments, queries, or points of rebuttal?

On another note, I need a new icon. None of my current ones are appropriate. I'll have to remedy that soon. *ponders*
